{"id":17160,"date":"2025-09-12T02:56:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T02:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/17160\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T02:56:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T02:56:07","slug":"u-s-influencer-under-investigation-in-australia-over-controversial-crocodile-videos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/17160\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. influencer under investigation in Australia over controversial crocodile videos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-e60f18\" class=\"body-graf\">Australian authorities said Thursday that they were investigating videos a U.S. influencer posted online that show him capturing and restraining wild <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/worlds-largest-captive-crocodile-cassius-dies-australia-rcna178501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">crocodiles<\/a> in the state of Queensland. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-308ed3\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThese actions are extremely dangerous and illegal, and we are actively exploring strong compliance action including fines to deter any person from this type of behavior,\u201d the Queensland environment department said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bb5d00\" class=\"body-graf\">Mike Holston, also known as The Real Tarzann, posted two videos in recent days to his 15 million followers on Instagram, including one in which he appears to wrestle a crocodile and ends up on top. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ae103e\" class=\"body-graf\">In the first video, Holston enters shallow water from a boat and runs toward what he says is a freshwater crocodile before he jumps on it and wrestles with it. Blood is visible on his left arm as he grabs the neck of the crocodile, which can be heard calling out. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-959ca7\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis is what dreams are made of,\u201d Holston says in the video as he holds the reptile, admitting that he has wanted to go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/australia-approves-first-chlamydia-vaccine-koalas-ravaged-disease-rcna230264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Australia<\/a> since he was young to see crocodiles up close. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a1fb8f\" class=\"body-graf\">Since it was posted Friday, the video has garnered over a million likes and been viewed more than 33 million times. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1172d4\" class=\"body-graf\">In the second video, Holston is seen in marshland chasing after what he says is a juvenile saltwater crocodile. He grabs the reptile rather easily, which Queensland officials said was \u201ccompletely uncharacteristic,\u201d citing crocodile experts. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d4b159\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIn normal conditions, such an animal would writhe and thrash about wildly, seeking to escape,\u201d they said. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8cbb02\" class=\"body-graf\">Both animals can be seen being released in the videos, which appear to have been recorded at Lockhart River on the Cape York Peninsula. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a13bf2\" class=\"body-graf\">Holston did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e9ad07\" class=\"body-graf\">In a comment on the video of the saltwater crocodile, he said he did not encourage anyone to try to re-create what he was doing, adding that the animal was \u201creleased after a few close looks and photos were taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-be3e04\" class=\"body-graf\">Not everyone, however, is buying that explanation. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9bde92\" class=\"body-graf\">Conservationist Bob Irwin, father of the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna14663786\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Steve Irwin<\/a>, Australia\u2019s famous \u201cCrocodile Hunter,\u201d called for greater penalties for social media posts such as Holston\u2019s, which he said \u201ccan have disastrous consequences for both people and wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-870224\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cPeople visiting our country need to respect our wildlife, or they need to be booted out the door,\u201d Irwin said in a statement that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/travel\/travel-updates\/incidents\/dckhead-bob-irwin-slams-us-influencer-mike-holstons-crocodile-catching-video\/news-story\/3f44df07dd5ec2f9e77e3bdcfe7c7ef1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">appeared in Australian media<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-90c00e\" class=\"body-graf\">Both saltwater and freshwater crocodiles can range from about 6 to 13 feet long, with male saltwaters weighing as much as 660 pounds and male freshwaters weighing as much as 132 pounds, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detsi.qld.gov.au\/our-department\/news-media\/down-to-earth\/snappy-facts-to-know-about-crocs-in-qld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Queensland environment department<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f8ffc2\" class=\"body-graf\">The maximum penalty for interfering with a crocodile is a fine of about 37,500 Australian dollars ($25,000). <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-381708\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">Holston is not the first U.S. influencer to have had a run-in with Australian authorities over wildlife content.
