Photo \/ Andrew Warner<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">She said residents had been told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/rotorua-daily-post\/news\/rotorua-homeless-help-new-transitional-housing-property-opens-at-former-boulevard-motel-site-on-fenton-st\/UEGTS6KOI77AVRZAKGE54GO3PE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/rotorua-daily-post\/news\/rotorua-homeless-help-new-transitional-housing-property-opens-at-former-boulevard-motel-site-on-fenton-st\/UEGTS6KOI77AVRZAKGE54GO3PE\/\">the premises<\/a> were being shut down in January and they all had to move out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">She said she was sad to leave because she liked the support of having lots of people living around her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">The Rotorua Daily Post asked the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development if the property  was closing in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">In a statement, a ministry spokesperson did not directly answer the question but said clients at 2six5 on Fenton were being moved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSome households have been placed already, and the remainder will be supported into other accommodation by the end of February.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">K\u0101inga Ora\u2019s director of supported housing, Lucy Ashby, said the geothermal bore used to provide heating and hot water to the site had reached the end of its operational life. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Residents living at 2six5 on Fenton have been told they must leave because of an issue with a bore. Photo \/ Kelly Makiha<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">She said WorkSafe was advised the bore needed to be either capped or replaced by February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">Ashby said those types of issues were not uncommon in Rotorua, and WorkSafe\u2019s involvement was standard practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhile transitional housing is always intended to be a temporary form of accommodation where wh\u0101nau can receive the support they need to then move into more appropriate, stable housing, we appreciate this issue could be unsettling for those affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">She said K\u0101inga Ora carefully considered whether residents could stay while work was completed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHowever, it would be very disruptive and would result in extended periods of time where residents would have no hot water or heating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">Wera Aotearoa Charitable Trust was working with residents to match them with alternative housing. This included K\u0101inga Ora homes in the Rotorua region, Ashby said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">She said K\u0101inga Ora was considering future options for the site, taking into account the bore and potential other work required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">She would not elaborate on what that might mean.<\/p>\n<p>History of the site<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/sold-government-pays-81m-for-boulevard-motel-to-house-homeless\/WBRLIMDOR5BDLCE5T3EZGJMFX4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/sold-government-pays-81m-for-boulevard-motel-to-house-homeless\/WBRLIMDOR5BDLCE5T3EZGJMFX4\/\">$8.1m<\/a> sale of the Boulevard Motel to the Government raised eyebrows in July 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">A Rotorua real estate agent said at the time that the motel covered six property titles, collectively valued at $4.3m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">Then-Labour MP Tamati Coffey had called the buy a \u201cgame-changer\u201d for people facing housing struggles, while Rotorua MP Todd McClay of National had said the Government should be building houses, not buying motels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/kainga-ora-pays-81m-for-motel-for-homeless-in-rotorua-nearly-double-cv-raising-questions-from-local-real-estate-agents\/7XVQFBXIBMXOVP2DU2NRZECZI4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/kainga-ora-pays-81m-for-motel-for-homeless-in-rotorua-nearly-double-cv-raising-questions-from-local-real-estate-agents\/7XVQFBXIBMXOVP2DU2NRZECZI4\/\">site reopened<\/a> in August 2022 under the new name 2six5 on Fenton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ehSvJlTQHTuOTYQ\" style=\"display:none\">The Government contracted Wera Aotearoa Charitable Trust to manage the transitional house and provide wrap-around support for those living there.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Government renovations transformed the Boulevard Motel into transitional housing.
