The new route will mark the first Qantas international services from the Gold Coast in nearly five years.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the new Auckland lounge is complete and will officially open next week.<\/p>\n

It is 60% bigger than its predecessor and designed to cater especially for transit passengers and New York travellers.<\/p>\n

It was designed in collaboration with Sydney-based Caon Design Office and Akin Atelier, and the New Zealand studio of Architectus.<\/p>\n

Some of Architectus\u2019 recent work included Auckland\u2019s SeaLink Wynyard Ferry Terminal<\/a> and Catalina Bay Apartments<\/a> in Hobsonville Point.<\/p>\n

In the refurbished Qantas lounge, 70% of seats had charging points. <\/p>\n

It also has 15 shower suites for customers. Each suite has a toilet, sink and shower, and a numbered door.<\/p>\n

There is a special Joey Club room for children.<\/p>\n

The Auckland lounge was closed for the rebuild<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n

Platinum One and Platinum Frequent Flyers will have access to a new dedicated dining area featuring seasonal menus.<\/p>\n

Qantas International chief executive Cam Wallace said Auckland was one of the airline\u2019s most important international hubs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt shows a significant investment and shows the confidence and the ambition and the growth that we expect in New Zealand for the years to come,\u201d Wallace said today.<\/p>\n

During the rebuild, Qantas passengers were accommodated at the nearby Emirates lounge.<\/p>\n

He said Auckland was \u201can emerging eastern hub for the airline\u201d.<\/p>\n

Auckland Airport chief executive Carrie Hurihanganui said the airport aimed to provide a \u201cmodern, intutitive and easy-to-navigate\u201d experience.<\/p>\n

She said the lounge complemented that ethos.<\/p>\n

David Caon of Caon Design said his company had also worked on lounges in Singapore and Sydney.<\/p>\n

He said the Auckland lounge had long-haul travellers in mind.<\/p>\n

He pointed to a landscape painting of Rangitoto, Devonport and the Waitemat\u0101.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a way for us to bring the outside in,\u201d he said, referring to transit passengers who would not leave the airport.<\/p>\n

Caon said virtually all materials in the new lounge were from New Zealand and Australia.<\/p>\n

He said many tradies and artisans worked on the lounge rebuild with project managers WT Partnerships.<\/p>\n

The lounge featured a \u201cporthole wall\u201d inspired by aircraft windows and similar to a design at Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

Carrara marble tabletops and American oak were also prominent throughout.<\/p>\n

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston welcomed the new routes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope Queenslanders make the most of this opportunity and experience everything New Zealand has to offer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Both new routes will be on Boeing 737 aircraft.<\/p>\n
