There is equipment around them, including a screen.\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 fHZDyi\"\/>BBC<\/p>\n<p>Staff practise on Linda the mannequin in the simulation laboratory<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">A simulation laboratory that can be used to recreate emergency childbirth situations for staff learning in a risk-free environment is revolutionising maternity training in Birmingham, the NHS has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The unit at Birmingham Women&#8217;s Hospital has been funded by a \u00a31m donation from high street fashion entrepreneur George Davies through his charitable trust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">It comes at a time when maternity services across the country are under scrutiny, following the <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-shropshire-60925959\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ockenden Report<\/a> on Shrewsbury and Telford NHS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Consultant neonatologist Matt Nash said: &#8220;The Ockenden report actually outlined that teams who work together need to train together, and simulation is the absolutely right way to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757511067_799_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 iMuqLZ hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6dab2570-88e0-11f0-8c02-ed32f57a7bac.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Hospital staff are working in the simulation room. There is a bed and other equipment in the room itself.\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 fHZDyi\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A key component is an interactive screen which places the team in different surroundings, such as a theatre setting or the inside of a helicopter<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The laboratory has areas kitted out as &#8220;real life&#8221; working wards, including a delivery room, a neonatal unit and a theatre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Scenarios that can be simulated include a home birth and a baby being born in a car park, then being moved with its mother to the delivery room, and then to the neonatal intensive care unit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757511067_799_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 iMuqLZ hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/038c65f0-88e0-11f0-8c02-ed32f57a7bac.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Hospital staff are using a microphone to give information to people in the lab about the unfolding emergency scenario. There is hospital equipment behind him and a brightly coloured picture.\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 fHZDyi\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Consultant neonatologist Matt Nash said simulation was the right way to train staff<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Perpetual, mother to five-year-old twins, was hospitalised with Covid in 2020 and was so ill she was put in an induced coma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Her twins were delivered by Caesarean section at 26 weeks in a high-risk operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Perpetual, a hospital consultant, said any effort to enhance maternity care was crucial, adding: &#8220;This is an added advantage to training, which we didn&#8217;t have before. They are all smiling and looking happy.\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 fHZDyi\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Perpetual had her twins, Osinachi and Sochika, during the Covid pandemic<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Mr Davies has supported the trust since 2006, when staff saved the life of his granddaughter, Evie, who was born with a rare heart defect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">He decided to support the hospital again with the donation after he met advanced neonatal nurse Catherine Powell in his local pub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Mr Davies said: &#8220;There&#8217;s not a person I&#8217;ve met that I&#8217;ve not been impressed with &#8211; a nurse or a doctor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">He said he planned to carry on supporting the trust, adding: &#8220;I think the biggest satisfaction to me in life now is helping people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757511067_799_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 iMuqLZ hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/f50820c0-88c9-11f0-8621-9dbb53d1b02b.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"George Davies is sitting on a sofa and leaning towards the camera.
