New Delhi: An X1.1 solar flare erupted from a cluster of sunspots designated as Active Region (AR) 4298, peaking at 05:01 hours UTC on 08 December. This was a short, impulsive eruption that caused a brief radio blackout on the sunlit side of the Earth. Another cluster of sunspots, AR 4298 was responsible for the M8.1 Solar Flare that erupted on 06 December, with the associated coronal mass ejection expected to wash over the Earth on 09 December, inducing a strong geomagnetic storm. M-class flares are the second highest category of solar flares, while X-class flares are the strongest category. The impact of the 08 December eruption is being analysed.

The Center of Excellence in Space Sciences India (CESSI) hosted by the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Kolkata issued an alert for an X-class flare. According to the Solar Influences Data Analysis Centre (SIDC) operated by the Royal Observatory of Belgium, “A class X1.1 solar X-ray flare occurred on 2025/12/08 with peak time 05:01UT”. According to the Space Weather Prediction Centre (SWPC) operated by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “An X1.1 flare was observed from Region 4298 at 05:01 UTC on 08 December, 2025.”

Space Weather Forecast

Modelling of the impact of the associated CME to the 08 December solar flare is awaited. According to the latest forecast by the SIDC, “Moderate to major geomagnetic storms might be expected starting early UTC on Dec 09 with chances of reaching severe geomagnetic conditions due to an anticipated arrival of the halo CME from Dec 06.” According to the forecast of the SWPC, “The geomagnetic field is likely to reach G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm
levels on 08 Dec due to the influence of the periphery of a CME that left the Sun on 04 Dec. G3 (Strong) geomagnetic storm levels are likely on 09 Dec due to the anticipated influence of the CME that left the Sun on 06 Dec. G1 conditions on 10 Dec are likely due to waning CME effects.”

Aditya has studied journalism, multimedia technologies and ᚨᚾᚲᛁᛖᚾᛏ ᚱᚢᚾᛖᛋ.
