Chu\u2019s film adaptation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/wicked\/\" id=\"auto-tag_wicked_1\" data-tag=\"wicked\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wicked<\/a>. She, along with her co-star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ariana-grande\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ariana-grande_1\" data-tag=\"ariana-grande\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ariana Grande<\/a>, boasts the rare feat of being nominated back-to-back for the same role \u2014 this year for her work in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/wicked-for-good\/\" id=\"auto-tag_wicked-for-good_1\" data-tag=\"wicked-for-good\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wicked: For Good<\/a> and last year in the film\u2019s first installment, Wicked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tErivo\u2019s got the nomination news from rehearsals for her one-woman West End production of Dracula, where she\u2019s set to play all 23 roles in the play. \u201cThis is a beautiful, beautiful surprise,\u201d the 38-year-old tells The Hollywood Reporter on a call from London. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s been a bit of a whirlwind from the beginning of the first film right through to this moment here. I don\u2019t know that any experience is comparable. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve experienced anything like it,\u201d Erivo says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cTo be nomianted twice with this movie is really special,\u201d she says. \u201cI think that\u2019s a testament to the work of Jon Chu and every single other person who has touched this set \u2014 Ari[ana Grande] and Jonathan [Bailey] and Marc Platt, who is our wonderful producer. Everyone has done such beautiful work, and I feel very lucky to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tErivo and the rest of the Wicked cast have been living in the world for years after a 160-day shoot. Chu and the cast shot both part one, released in November 2024, and part two, released this November, in one go, with the exception of the final 10 days of the shoot that were halted due to the strike and finished at the beginning of 2024. After the lengthy filming process came the lengthy press tour for Wicked that\u2019s bled into press for Wicked: For Good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe actress admits there\u2019s plenty of emotion wrapped up in this final stretch of her Wicked journey, however, she notes it feels like the timing is right. \u201cI think it\u2019s time to be able to let it go, to give it away to the watchers, the audience,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt\u2019s never really going to leave our lives just because it\u2019s been such a big part of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tErivo notes that Wicked will always stick with her and be \u201cpart of the history\u201d she has throughout her career, adding that she doesn\u2019t feel like anything people do is ever gone if they\u2019re putting their heart and soul into it. \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever forget the experience, and the most wonderful thing about it is that I\u2019m in contact and will always be in contact with every single person who is a part of this journey,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t know, it doesn\u2019t feel like a goodbye. More like a see you later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tErivo\u2019s new song, \u201cNo Place Like Home,\u201d was also nominated in the original song category, alongside her co-star Grande\u2019s \u201cThe Girl in the Bubble.\u201d Wicked stuck strictly to the stage musical, not including new songs, however, both the show\u2019s original composer and lyricist, who also composed both new songs, and Chu have spoken in the past about how they were only adding new music when it felt warranted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s really beautiful that we both have these songs nominated and we\u2019re nominated as well. It\u2019s very special,\u201d Erivo laments, adding she believes in these songs so much. \u201cI think both of songs are extremely special, and they both lead to the characters\u2019 journeys and what they\u2019re both going through. Again, it\u2019s Stephen Schwartz\u2019s genius ,and the collaboration that we\u2019ve all had to make these songs connect and hopefully they tell a wider story of who these women are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMonday\u2019s nomination also made Erivo the first Black woman to be nominated twice in her category. \u201cThat\u2019s a surreal thing,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen someone told me I started laughing [and] giggling because I didn\u2019t realize. It\u2019s all very surreal and wonderful and glorious and I\u2019m very, very grateful for it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs Erivo closes, at least in terms of the project itself, her Wicked chapter, there are things she hopes viewers will take away from the film and her beloved Elphaba. \u201cShe experiences joy and hurt and pain and grief, and in this second movie you get to dive into her feelings even more. You get to see how vulnerable she can become,\u201d the actress explains. \u201cWhen we see \u2018No Good Deed\u2019 I think people mistake sometimes a fire for power and confidence that actually is grief, loss, pain, hurt, doubt, all of those things, and surrender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAdds Erivo, \u201cThe opportunity to be able to share the breadth of humanity in a character is a rare thing, and that\u2019s what this character has allowed for me to do, both physically and emotionally. I\u2019m really proud of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/golden-globes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_golden-globes_1\" data-tag=\"golden-globes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Globes<\/a> producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cynthia Erivo is officially a five-time Golden Globe nominee.
