Instead of relying on slow, hardware\u2011bound iteration, robotic systems are defined digitally, validated in parallel scenarios and deployed with confidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">He described it as a \u201csort of blockchain intelligence company\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">Its tech was designed as a tool for authorities trying to track the flow of Bitcoin and other virtual currencies, the better to thwart the likes of \u201ccriminals or adversarial nation states using cryptocurrencies to evade sanctions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">In May 2023, the pair sold Transpose \u2013 still only months old \u2013 to the market leader in its field, national security contractor Chainalysis, in a deal the Herald understands ran to eight figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">Mellsop and Langshur stayed with Transpose until May this year, when he and Langshure co-founded Antioch with two more Stanford alumni: Colton Swingle and Collin Schlager.<\/p>\n<p>Kiwis back raise<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">The US$4.3 million ($7.4m) \u201cpre-seed round\u201d was led by a US venture capital firm, A* Ventures with support from Auckland\u2019s Icehouse Ventures and one of Mellsop\u2019s fellow Kiwi expats working in AI, founder Adrian Macneil (who just last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/ai-robotics-firm-foxglove-headed-by-kiwi-adrian-macneil-raises-us40m\/VU25Y7ELFZH5ZN2JHJL7MWP5PQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/ai-robotics-firm-foxglove-headed-by-kiwi-adrian-macneil-raises-us40m\/VU25Y7ELFZH5ZN2JHJL7MWP5PQ\/\">raised US$40m<\/a> for his own physical-world AI start-up, Foxglove).<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">US VCs Abstract, MaC Venture Capital (who also supported a Transponse) and Box Group also supported the round.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Absurdly manual\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cRight now, the way companies train AI for robots is absurdly manual,\u201d Mellsop said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019ve talked to teams literally renting Airbnbs just so they can test their household robots overnight, or spending millions building fake warehouses and neighbourhoods to simulate the real world. It\u2019s slow, expensive and wildly inefficient. With Antioch, you can do all of that virtually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">The pre-seed funds will be used for product development, as Antioch works with early customers. But the sort of hiring frenzy we saw in yesteryear \u2013 or even just two years ago \u2013 is not part of the agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe will bring on a few extras, but we can run a lot leaner than Transpose,\u201d Mellsop said, thanks to new AI tools that help build software.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest thing of the Next Big Things<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">This time, he and his co-founders have no plans for a trade sale, Mellsop said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">He said no one else is creating the kind of \u201cwholesale\u201d solution that Antioch offers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">Mellsop said large language models like ChatGPT have changed white-collar work forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBut someone still needs the things we use every day. We still need logistics. We still need agriculture. And AI is still not providing the same efficiency gains in the physical world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">Mellsop said he saw Antioch helping to provide that boost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe think that we\u2019re very early to the market with a solution that almost everybody is going to need in that space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe see this as a longer-term play. We believe that the physical AI industry is going to be the largest industry in the world of the next 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Re-shoring\u2019 manufacturing<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">Mellsop is also thinking big in terms of socio-political themes \u2013 and \u201cre-shoring\u201d manufacturing in an increasingly unstable world, in part using his young firm\u2019s technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn New Zealand and in the US, over the last 50 years, we\u2019ve seen a lot of jobs moved overseas and a lot of industries that used to be the lifeblood of the economy moved overseas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn a less-certain macro geopolitical environment, bringing as much of that back home as possible is kind of critical from a national security perspective, but also as a social objective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AI OE<\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">Mellsop is one of a small army of Kiwi expats making it big in AI. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sBjZnPfQVXyUIbaV\" style=\"display:none\">Beyond the aforementioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/ai-robotics-firm-foxglove-headed-by-kiwi-adrian-macneil-raises-us40m\/VU25Y7ELFZH5ZN2JHJL7MWP5PQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/ai-robotics-firm-foxglove-headed-by-kiwi-adrian-macneil-raises-us40m\/VU25Y7ELFZH5ZN2JHJL7MWP5PQ\/\">Macneil<\/a>, the crew includes <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\" rel=\"\" title=\"\">Ben Goodger<\/a>, who heads the team that created OpenAI\u2019s Atlas web browser;
