{"id":174386,"date":"2025-12-08T22:41:06","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T22:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/174386\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T22:41:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T22:41:06","slug":"where-and-when-you-could-see-the-northern-lights-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/174386\/","title":{"rendered":"Where and When You Could See the Northern Lights This Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color min-h-[6.375rem] lg:min-h-[4.75rem] dropcap text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7333677\/northern-lights-aurora-borealis-photos-how-to-see\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Lights<\/a> could illuminate skies in over a dozen states on Monday and Tuesday..<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Large expulsions of plasma from the sun, known as coronal mass ejection, are forecast to reach the Earth overnight Monday or by midday on Tuesday, according to The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/forecast-discussion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space Weather Prediction Center <\/a>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/specialist-forecasts\/space-weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.K.\u2019s national meteorological service<\/a>, which could cause a strong geomagnetic storm and make the Northern Lights visible further south than usual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The beautiful phenomenon, also known as the aurora borealis, occurs when such plasma and the Earth\u2019s magnetic field interact, producing colorful light displays.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Geomagnetic activity will likely reach a G1 on the geomagnetic storm scale, ranking as a minor event, on Monday, before intensifying into a stronger G3 geomagnetic storm on Tuesday, NOAA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/forecast-discussion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">predicted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Portions of 15 states could have a full or partial view of the aurora Monday and Tuesday, per the agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">forecast<\/a>, including Alaska, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wyoming, Washington, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">A forecast from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gi.alaska.edu\/monitors\/aurora-forecast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Geophysical Institute<\/a> at the University of Alaska predicts that, with clear skies, the lights could be visible Monday evening from Utqia\u0121vik to Anchorage and Juneau in Alaska, as well as in Maine, Idaho, Indiana, and Wyoming. On Tuesday evening, the University is slightly more optimistic than NOAA, showing potential for the lights to be seen in cities like Indianapolis, Chicago, Cleveland and Boston, as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">And the lights don\u2019t have to be directly overhead for you to potentially see them: According to NOAA, it can be observed from as much as over 500 miles away when the aurora is bright and if conditions are right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">To get the best view the phenomenon, the agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/content\/tips-viewing-aurora\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recommends<\/a> finding space away from city lights and viewing the sky in the late evening or very early morning (within two hours of midnight).<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Less than <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7333677\/northern-lights-aurora-borealis-photos-how-to-see\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one month<\/a> ago, the aurora borealis was seen not only in northern states like Minnesota and Montana, but as far south as states like Florida, Alabama, and New Mexico.<br \/>Its expected appearance in the skies this week comes just days before another much-anticipated celestial event is set to occur: the peak of the Geminids meteor shower. The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/geminids\/#:~:text=Unlike%20most%20meteor%20showers%20which,look%20like%20a%20rocky%20asteroid.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meteor shower<\/a>, considered one of the best and most reliable to take place each year, occurs every December as the Earth orbits through a patch of debris left behind by a mass known as 3200 Phaethon. This year it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.net\/files\/meteor-shower\/cal2025.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">began<\/a> on Dec. 4 and will end on Dec. 17, with the peak expected to occur on Dec. 12 and 13.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Northern Lights could illuminate skies in over a dozen states on Monday and Tuesday..
