Ricky Gervais has landed another Golden Globe nomination, this time for his upcoming stand-up special Mortality.<\/p>\n

The 64-year-old has now received 10 Globe nods throughout his career, winning five awards so far. <\/p>\n

His international breakthrough came in 2004, when The Office scooped two major honours and acted as a \u201cgateway to America\u201d for the British comedian.<\/p>\n

He has since been recognised for other hit shows including Extras and Derek, as well as his stand-up work. <\/p>\n

The comedian’s most recent win came in 2024 for Ricky Gervais: Armageddon, although he declined to attend the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Mr Gervais has become just as well known for hosting the awards, fronting the Globes five times.<\/p>\n

His performances in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2020 built a reputation for savaging both Hollywood elites and the awards body itself, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.<\/p>\n

By playing \u201cthe outsider\u201d looking in, he prioritised global audiences over the celebrities in the room, leaving crowds stunned with expletive-laced jabs at industry scandals, age gaps and hypocrisy.<\/p>\n

Mr Gervais\u2019 most notable dig was aimed at disgraced financer Jeffrey Epstein and came during his fifth and final stint hosting the 2020 Golden Globes.<\/p>\n

While promoting his Netflix series After Life, he told the audience: \u201cSpoiler alert, season two is on the way, so in the end he obviously didn\u2019t kill himself\u2026 just like Jeffrey Epstein.\u201d<\/p>\n

The joke sparked groans and an awkward reaction, famously captured in a viral shot of Tom Hanks. Gervais immediately fired back: \u201cShut up! I know he\u2019s your friend, but I don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite gasps, groans and constant controversy, organisers repeatedly brought him back, with his shock factor boosting ratings and media coverage.<\/p>\n

The actor’s appearance in 2020 was seen as a definitive end to his run, marked by his viral message urging winners to avoid lecturing audiences.<\/p>\n

Supporters now want a return. Following today\u2019s nomination, fans flooded social media with messages such as \u201cToo bad you\u2019re not hosting the show!\u201d and \u201cYou absolutely have to host it! Pretty please!\u201d<\/p>\n

Reacting to his nomination for his upcoming Netflix special Mortality this morning, Mr Gervais posted: \u201cF*** me! I\u2019ve been nominated for another Golden Globe!\u201d<\/p>\n

Alongside the message, Mr Gervais shared an LA Times review of the special, which described the special as \u201chilariously macabre commentary about life through his signature blend of dark humor, empathy and razor-sharp commentary”.<\/p>\n

The news arrives amid debate over Mortality, after an early clip drew criticism online.<\/p>\n

In the clip, the comedian joked that he’s “pretty sure I’m not autistic” because someone once handed him a Rubik’s Cube and he threw it away.<\/p>\n

Upon viewing the clip, critics branded him \u201cthe most overhyped comedian of all time”, while others claimed he peaked with The Office.<\/p>\n

Mr Gervais directly responded to attacks, mocking those who \u201ctake the set-up to a joke seriously,\u201d and later fired back again when a user claimed they missed the humour.<\/p>\n

\u201cWasn\u2019t the thousands of people laughing loudly a clue?\u201d he wrote, referring to the audience laughter that can be heard in the background of the clip.<\/p>\n

The comedian then posted a video urging critics not to watch the Netflix release if they dislike his work.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you didn\u2019t like my previous shows, you\u2019ll hate it. Don\u2019t watch it,\u201d he said, adding that unhappy viewers should instead \u201cwatch Doctor Who.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2026 Golden Globe nominations were announced today, with several well-known comedians joining Ricky Gervais in the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category.<\/p>\n
