{"id":174729,"date":"2025-12-09T03:25:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T03:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/174729\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T03:25:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T03:25:08","slug":"moulting-elephant-seal-a-rare-sight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/174729\/","title":{"rendered":"Moulting elephant seal a rare sight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A rarely seen elephant seal has made Otago Peninsula its home for Christmas as it experiences one of the most vulnerable phases of its life.<\/p>\n<p>Clearwater Wildlife Tours owner Rachel Kerr spotted a juvenile elephant seal on private land at Cape Saunders about a week ago.<\/p>\n<p>Initially she thought it was a fleeting appearance but then realised it was in the midst of what is known as a catastrophic moult \u2014 a once-a-year occurrence in which elephant seals remain onshore and fast for about a month while forming a new coat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He turned up one morning and we were delighted to see him,&#8221; Mrs Kerr said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were thrilled \u2014 it\u2019s such a rare event to see them on shore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She suspected the seal made its way around the coast from Aramoana and Harington Point to avoid sea lions.<\/p>\n<p>The seal was &#8220;quite a character&#8221; and kept the tour company\u2019s guests entertained from a viewing platform at Cape Saunders.<\/p>\n<p>It appeared to look &#8220;pretty rough&#8221; because it had shed its fur, but it was fine.<\/p>\n<p>However, it could not go back out to sea because it would be too cold and vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Kerr said it was very rare to see an elephant seal and there had only been about five sightings in New Zealand \u2014 and none had been seen moulting.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A rarely seen elephant seal has made Otago Peninsula its home for Christmas as it experiences one of&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":174730,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[111,139,69,147,406],"class_list":{"0":"post-174729","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-wildlife","8":"tag-new-zealand","9":"tag-newzealand","10":"tag-nz","11":"tag-science","12":"tag-wildlife"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/174729","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=174729"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/174729\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/174730"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=174729"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=174729"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=174729"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
