{"id":174864,"date":"2025-12-09T05:17:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T05:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/174864\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T05:17:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T05:17:11","slug":"what-went-right-this-week-the-good-news-that-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/174864\/","title":{"rendered":"What went right this week: the good news that matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                                    A roadmap for ending plastic pollution was published <\/p>\n<p>After a global treaty to end plastic pollution was derailed by petrostates in August, scientists have published their own roadmap for tackling it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Commissioned by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pew.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/reports\/2025\/12\/breaking-the-plastic-wave-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">report<\/a> warns that plastic pollution will double by 2040 at the current rate. However, it says that existing solutions could \u201cvirtually eliminate\u201d it, while supporting millions of jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Refill schemes are touted as a key solution. France is among the nations to have mandated them, obliging supermarkets to have dedicated spaces where customers can bring their own containers to stock up on items.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The mass adoption of such schemes, the report says, could cut annual plastic pollution by 83%, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower the health impacts of plastic by more than half, all while supporting 8.6m jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis report shows a path to cut pollution by 83% by 2040. It\u2019s ambitious, but achievable,\u201d said Dr Costas Velis from Imperial College London, which contributed to the study.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His colleague Dr Ed Cook added: \u201cThis report is a wake-up call.
