{"id":175560,"date":"2025-12-09T14:53:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T14:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/175560\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T14:53:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T14:53:11","slug":"nara-lee-draws-on-seouls-wild-nature-for-stainless-steel-pul-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/175560\/","title":{"rendered":"Nara Lee draws on Seoul&#8217;s &#8220;wild nature&#8221; for stainless-steel Pul collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Paris-based architect Nara Lee has unveiled her Pul collection of sculptural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/metal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">metal<\/a> and leather <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/design\/furniture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">furniture<\/a> at The Sun Room exhibition in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/seoul\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seoul<\/a>, South Korea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/e-e-l.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lee<\/a>&#8216;s Pul collection comprises chairs, benches and folding screens made from stainless-steel sheets and oversized leather straps, which have been stitched into oversized holes in the furniture.<\/p>\n<p>The sculptural pieces have clean, geometric shapes, with chairs whose backs bend backwards and appear to be held together by the leather ties.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2277786 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/nara-lee-the-sun-room_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"The Sun Room exhibition of metal furniture\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The Sun Room exhibition in Seoul showcased Nara Lee&#8217;s Pul collection. Photo by Namuk Kim<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Metal is structural yet flexible, while leather is soft yet strong,&#8221; Lee told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to subvert the typical uses of these materials and highlight the relationship between nature and the man-made,&#8221; she continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m also drawn to the way metal interacts with light, which in the end, ties perfectly to the exhibition&#8217;s title, The Sun Room.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2277797 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/the-sun-room-nara-lee_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Bench by Nara Lee\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Benches, chairs and screens were on show<\/p>\n<p>The architect, who has previously worked with brands such as Italian fashion house <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/prada\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prada<\/a>, drew on the nature that envelops Seoul when creating the collection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While hiking the mountain behind my home in Korea this summer, I was struck by how wild nature lives right inside Seoul&#8217;s dense urban landscape,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Something I could appreciate with a fresh eye after my time in Paris. That coexistence became the starting point for Pul, named after the Korean word for &#8216;grass&#8217; in its broadest sense.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2277802 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/the-sun-room-nara-lee_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x1135.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of two metal chairs\" width=\"1774\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The metal chairs have bending backs<\/p>\n<p>The reference to grass can be seen in the chairs&#8217; curved metal backrests, which move slightly when people use them and were designed to evoke &#8220;the resilience of living organisms,&#8221; the architect said.<\/p>\n<p>The collection was shown at The Sun Room exhibition in Seoul, for which Lee collaborated with lighting studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aklyphs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aklyphs<\/a>, drawing on the concepts of greenhouses and solariums.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/02\/11\/special-effects-aluminium-david-taylor-bukowskis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/david-taylor-special-effects-bukowsis_dezeen_2364_sq_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Aluminium lighting and clock by David Taylor for Special Effects exhibition at Bukowskis in Stockholm\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Crafting aluminium is &#8220;like silversmithing on steroids&#8221; says David Taylor\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I imagined the exhibition as a kind of greenhouse where natural and artificial worlds overlap, bridging what is living and what is constructed,&#8221; Lee explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By shaping plant-like forms with processed materials, I wanted to bring attention to the tension, and the harmony, between organic growth and engineered structure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2277793 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/the-sun-room-nara-lee_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1135.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of metal shelves\" width=\"1774\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Leather straps appeared to hold the furniture together<\/p>\n<p>While the pieces might look less comfortable than traditional padded chairs, Lee said they are &#8220;surprisingly comfortable&#8221; and were made to be functional as well as decorative.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the comments I hear most often is that the pieces are much more comfortable than people expect,&#8221; the architect said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2277787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/nara-lee-the-sun-room_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Seoul gallery filled with metal furniture\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The Sun Room was shown in Seoul&#8217;s Mirae Building. Photo by Namuk Kim<\/p>\n<p>The opening day of The Sun Room exhibition at the Mirae Building in Seoul featured a performance by a dancer to further underline the relationship between the organic and the man-made.<\/p>\n<p>The last few years have seen a number of designers working with metal to create sculptural furniture pieces.<\/p>\n<p>In London, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/10\/03\/henry-svendsen-handle-collection-metal-leather\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Svendsen created the &#8220;kink-coded&#8221; Handle collection<\/a>, while Scottish designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/02\/11\/special-effects-aluminium-david-taylor-bukowskis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Taylor unveiled an all-aluminium collection during Stockholm Design Week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The material was also among the most popular at Milan design week last year, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/04\/26\/mono-material-metal-furniture-milan-design-week\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mono-material metal designs taking centre stage<\/a> during the event.<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/___yjc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yongjoon Choi<\/a> unless otherwise stated.<\/p>\n<p>The Sun Room was on show at Mirae Building, Seoul, from 23 November to 7 December.
