It’s possible to get the flu from touching an infected surface and then touching your hands, nose, and mouth, but he points out that this is less common than the other ways we just listed.

There’s a difference in how long these illnesses last, too. “Norovirus lasts a few days before symptoms abate; influenza about a week, though cough and fatigue may persist longer,” Dr. Adalja says.

Norovirus vs. flu: Treatment

There are some big differences in how these illnesses are treated. “Influenza is treated with antiviral therapies as well as symptomatic medication, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen,” Dr. Adalja says. (The most common antiviral medication for the flu is oseltamivir, a.k.a. Tamiflu.)

But norovirus doesn’t have a specific antiviral medication. Instead, medications like Pepto-Bismol may help, according to Dr. Adalja. If the nausea and vomiting are really bad, doctors may prescribe an antiemetic medication to help you keep things down, Dr. Russo says. However, the big focus is on staying hydrated, he says.

Norovirus vs. flu: Prevention

The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated against the virus, Dr. Schaffner says. “We don’t have a vaccine against norovirus, unfortunately,” he says.

Good hand hygiene is important for both viruses, he says. (Keep in mind that hand sanitizer won’t kill norovirus, so soap and water are best.) If you’re able, it’s best to try to avoid people who are obviously sick, Dr. Schaffner says. And, if you’re in a high-risk group, he recommends putting on a mask when you’re in crowded indoor settings to lower your risk of either illness.

While there’s no public health agency recommendation for this, Dr. Russo suggests putting on a mask if you need to care for someone with norovirus. “The mask will protect you from aerosols and block your nose and mouth,” he points out.

Both of these viruses spread easily, making them tough to avoid, especially if someone else in your household is sick, Dr. Russo says. Ultimately, just do your best.

Related Stories

Cases of norovirus and the flu are jumping around the country.
