NZ Herald business editor at large Liam Dann told The Front Page<\/a> that we don\u2019t get up-to-date data around departures to Australia specifically.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we do know that somewhere around 50% to 60% of all migration out of New Zealand is to Australia traditionally.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe big push and pull in either direction for migration is very much the economy, very much the job market. If job prospects and wages are significantly better in Australia, then you\u2019ll see that flow increase.<\/p>\n

\u201cHistorically, it\u2019s tended to look a bit better in Australia most of the time, and in New Zealand the job market has been really tough. They haven\u2019t had the kind of short, sharp economic shock that we\u2019ve had in New Zealand. <\/p>\n

\u201cTheir interest rates and the way that the Reserve Bank has done things there has been to take a more casual pace or a more relaxed attitude to inflation. We\u2019ve hit it pretty hard in New Zealand, and obviously everybody knows we\u2019ve had a pretty rough two years compared to Australia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
