An ex-orthopaedic surgeon from Delhi Hospital has issued a warning about certain antacid medicines, highlighting their potential to cause serious side effects such as vitamin B12 deficiency and osteoporosis. Many people take these tablets for acidity without realising the potential health risks involved.<\/p>\n
Dr. Obaidur Rahman took to Instagram to caution the public against antacid tablets like PAN 40, PAN D, and PANTOP, explaining how their prolonged use can adversely affect health.<\/p>\n
Orthopaedic Surgeon Warns Against Antacid Tablets<\/p>\n
Dr Rahman shared a video with the caption, \u201cStop using this tablet! This is causing more damage than you imagine.” He then proceeded to talk about how antacids like PAN 40, PAN D, and PANTOP are often taken in Indian households to help with stomach acid problems and heartburn, but a high dose of these can cause a deficiency of vitamin B12 and magnesium and bone problems such as osteoporosis-related fractures.<\/p>\n
The doctor then shared one of his patients\u2019 stories \u2013 an 80-year-old man who used to take these tablets regularly suffered from osteoporosis. \u201cA patient came to me\u2026he has a regular habit of taking the tablet, and because of that, he suffered an osteoporotic fracture. That is, he fell while walking and got a fracture,” Dr Rahman shared.<\/p>\n
He further shared, \u201cIn your Indian culture, both the young generation and old people use it very rampantly, without any prescription. Agar aap isko regularly lete hai, aapka gastric mucosa response karna bandh kar deta hai against proper acid production aur digestion main bhi problem hota hai.”<\/p>\n
Viewers Ask For Substitutes<\/p>\n
The video generated a massive response on the internet. While some people thanked the doctor for sharing the insight, others were shocked to know the truth. \u201cThank you so much. Last week I took it for back pain for the first time. Ab nahi,” one user wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh damn, I had this tablet for the first time in my life for 1 week, and yes, since stopping it, I can feel the change in digestion,” wrote another.<\/p>\n
Someone else shared, \u201cI used to take this PANTOP D for gastric for many months, but the issue never resolved.”<\/p>\n
Another asked, \u201cAre there any substitutes?” to which Dr Rahman replied, Medicine-wise, the best substitute is to avoid long-term use altogether. It\u2019s important to supplement the nutrients that the medicine depletes and focus on improving your gut health to reduce dependency.<\/p>\n
