\n\tDavid Letterman<\/a> stopped by Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> Live on Tuesday night and took the opportunity to praise host Jimmy Kimmel for being \u201cthe leader of the resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou know that I love you. I love this man,\u201d Letterman praised Kimmel after sitting down to discuss the new season of his Netflix talk series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction<\/a>, which returns Dec. 16. \u201cPeople are aware of the fact that you are the leader of the resistance?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI am the totally ineffective leader of the resistance,\u201d Kimmel agreed. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSpeaking of leaders, let me just say one thing here,\u201d Letterman continued. \u201cI\u2019m going to suck up to you because I feel like if I kind of tag along with you I\u2019ll be glorified in retrospect. \u2026 Now this is irrespective of party or political ideology. Irrespective of party or political ideology, if the leader of the free world is a fool, the leader of the free world should expect and examine every bit of ridicule he receives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLetterman was, of course, referring to Donald Trump, who frequently finds himself in the crosshairs of Kimmel\u2019s jokes. Kimmel deferred to Letterman, noting that if he\u2019s done anything right \u201cI\u2019ve definitely learned it from you.\u201d The former late-night host congratulated Kimmel on his new contract, which extends Kimmel\u2019s deal at ABC until May 2027. \u201dAnother year of twisting those folks at Disney, good for you,\u201d Letterman said. \u201cAgain, good for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKimmel asked Letterman if he ever missed hosting late-night TV<\/a>, confirming that it\u2019s been 10 years since Letterman departed The Late Show. \u201cPeople used to know who I am and now I have to wear a name tag to get anything going,\u201d Letterman quipped. He added later, more seriously, \u201cI am so glad to be out from under this mess because people like you and people like Stephen [Colbert] and people like Seth [Meyers] do such a masterful job of this defending democracy. Thank God for you, thank God for others,\u00a0SNL\u00a0and everybody else. I think it\u2019s the way things need to be in a democracy that\u2019s seemingly this crippled.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier this year, Letterman lent his support<\/a> to Kimmel after ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/a> off the air temporarily following\u00a0pressure from the Trump<\/a>\u00a0administration. \u201cWe see where this is all going, correct?\u201d Letterman said in response. \u201cIt\u2019s managed media. And it\u2019s no good. It\u2019s silly. It\u2019s ridiculous. And you can\u2019t go around firing somebody because you\u2019re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian criminal administration in the Oval Office. That\u2019s just not how this works.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cThe institution of the president of the United States ought to be bigger than a guy doing a talk show.\u201d<\/p>\n
