{"id":178799,"date":"2025-12-11T10:14:05","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T10:14:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/178799\/"},"modified":"2025-12-11T10:14:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T10:14:05","slug":"traditional-medicine-is-now-a-global-reality-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/178799\/","title":{"rendered":"Traditional medicine is now a global reality: WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That\u2019s according to Shyama Kuruvilla, director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WHO<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/initiatives\/who-global-traditional-medicine-centre\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" data-entity-type=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Global Traditional Medicine Centre<\/a>, established in 2022 to tap into the potential of these systems for healthcare and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith half the world\u2019s population lacking access to essential health services, traditional medicine is often the closest or only care available for many people,\u201d Ms. Kuruvilla told a virtual media briefing on Wednesday, ahead of this month\u2019s WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor many others, it\u2019s a preferred choice because it is personalised and holistic. It\u2019s bioculturally aligned and it supports overall well-being rather than only treating specific disease symptoms,\u201d she continued. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What is traditional medicine?<\/p>\n<p>According to WHO, traditional medicine comprises practices and knowledge from various historical and cultural contexts, which pre-date biomedicine and mainstream medical practices.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional medicine emphasizes nature-based remedies and holistic, personalised approaches to restore balance of mind, body and environment. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Kuruvilla said global demand for traditional medicine is rising due to chronic diseases, mental health needs, stress management and the search for meaningful care.<\/p>\n<p>Despite widespread use and demand, however, less than one per cent of global health research funding currently supports it, she added.<\/p>\n<p>What will happen at the Summit?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/who-global-traditional-medicine-centre\/global-summit-and-collaborations\/second-traditional-medicine-global-summit\" target=\"_blank\" data-entity-type=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine<\/a> will take place from 17 to 19 December and will bring together policy makers, practitioners, scientists and Indigenous leaders from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>It will be held in New Delhi, India, and online.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will discuss how to implement the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240113176\" target=\"_blank\" data-entity-type=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WHO Global traditional medicine strategy through 2034<\/a>, which aims to advance evidence-based<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/traditional-complementary-and-integrative-medicine#tab=tab_1\" target=\"_blank\" data-entity-type=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> traditional, complementary and integrative medicine<\/a> and provides guidance on regulation and multi-stakeholder collaboration. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Global Summit aims to foster the conditions and collaborations required for traditional medicine to contribute at scale to the flourishing of all people and our planet,\u201d Ms. Kuruvilla concluded. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously, WHO is launching a global traditional medicine library \u2014 the first-of-its-kind digital platform with over 1.6 million scientific records on the topic, a traditional medicine data network and a Framework on Indigenous Knowledge, Biodiversity and Health, among other initiatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"That\u2019s according to Shyama Kuruvilla, director of WHO\u2019s Global Traditional Medicine Centre, established in 2022 to tap into&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":178800,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[33],"tags":[134,524,111,139,69],"class_list":{"0":"post-178799","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-medication","8":"tag-health","9":"tag-medication","10":"tag-new-zealand","11":"tag-newzealand","12":"tag-nz"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/178799","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=178799"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/178799\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/178800"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=178799"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=178799"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=178799"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
