{"id":180462,"date":"2025-12-12T16:33:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T16:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/180462\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T16:33:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T16:33:07","slug":"flooding-remains-threat-in-pacific-north-west-as-washington-declares-emergency-us-weather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/180462\/","title":{"rendered":"Flooding remains threat in Pacific north-west as Washington declares emergency | US weather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dangerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/flooding\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flood<\/a> waters from historically swollen rivers in the Pacific north-west were continuing to cause a huge threat on Friday as 100,000 people in the area were under evacuation warnings and more deluges are due on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Torrential rain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/video\/2025\/dec\/11\/atmospheric-river-triggers-floods-in-washington-state-video\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">triggered flooding<\/a> on Thursday across much of the region from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/oregon\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oregon<\/a> north through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/washington-state\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington<\/a> state and into British Columbia, closing dozens of roads and already prompting the evacuations of tens of thousands of people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The intense rain began earlier in the week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/video\/2025\/dec\/11\/atmospheric-river-triggers-floods-in-washington-state-video\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">swept into the region<\/a> by a storm system meteorologists call an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/17\/what-are-atmospheric-rivers\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">atmospheric river<\/a>, a vast airborne current of dense moisture funneled inland from the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The governor of Washington, Bob Ferguson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/10\/pacific-north-west-flooding\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declared<\/a> a statewide emergency on Wednesday in response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/us-weather\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heavy weather<\/a> that has caused mudslides and washed out roads and submerged vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Western <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/washington-state\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington state<\/a> bore the brunt of the storm, with flood watches posted across the Cascade and Olympic mountains and Puget Sound, as well as for a northern slice of Oregon, a region home to some 5.8 million people, according to the US National Weather Service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The same storm system brought heavy showers and flooding to western <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/montana\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Montana<\/a> and an edge of northern Idaho.<\/p>\n<p>A sign warning drivers about flood water is partially covered by water in an area flooded by the Snohomish River on 11 December. Photograph: David Ryder\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Roughly 100,000 residents in western Washington on Friday were under level 3 evacuation orders urging them to immediately move to higher ground, the bulk of them in rural Skagit county north of Seattle, said Karina Shagren, a spokesperson for the state emergency management division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">About 3,800 evacuees were believed to be in need of temporary shelter, Skagit county emergency chief Julie de Losada said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">First responders have rescued several people, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/article\/weather\/severe-weather\/dramatic-rescue-drivers-trapped-swiftwaters-fall-city\/281-7bbec705-c63d-442a-a697-0a324b6dcf2e\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by helicopter<\/a> in King and <a href=\"https:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/united-states-coast-guard-residents-floodwaters-sumas-whatcom-county-nooksack-river-fire-district-14-flooding-western-washington-helicopter-mh-65-dolphin-jayhawk\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Whatcom<\/a> counties in recent days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The worst flooding was reported along the Skagit, Snohomish and Puyallup rivers. More than 30 highways and dozens of smaller roads were closed due to flooding across the region, state officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Several lengthy segments of the BNSF Railway, a major freight line serving the Pacific north-west, were washed out or closed due to flooding, the company said, citing reported rainfall of 10 to 17in or more in many areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Some rivers have been cresting several feet above record levels and on Friday morning had not receded.
