{"id":181363,"date":"2025-12-13T04:53:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T04:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/181363\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T04:53:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T04:53:07","slug":"auckland-aerial-fire-truck-failure-sparks-warning-over-ageing-fleet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/181363\/","title":{"rendered":"Auckland aerial fire truck failure sparks warning over ageing fleet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">The NZPFU said the \u201cfailure\u201d played out in full public view.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">They said this incident took a critical aerial appliance out of service and further reduced Auckland\u2019s already stretched emergency response capability. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis is the emergency Fenz [Fire and Emergency New Zealand] won\u2019t talk about: aging [sic] equipment, repeated breakdowns, and a system with no resilience when frontline appliances fail,\u201d NZPFU said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said the Auckland aerial truck in question had a hydraulic leak today, which has since been repaired and is operational again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe acknowledge we have an ageing fleet and that is why we have a fleet replacement programme underway. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe are currently spending $20 million a year to replace our older trucks,\u201d the spokesperson said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">Fire and Emergency said it is having five replacement aerial trucks built, which are expected to be delivered by the middle of next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">The spokesperson said they have replaced 317 trucks since Fire and Emergency was established in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">This comes after Fire and Emergency said paid firefighters are \u201crolling the dice on people\u2019s safety\u201d with ongoing strike action, RNZ reported. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\">In a statement, Fire and Emergency said there were 22 calls for incidents during the hour that union-affiliated staff walked off the job during earlier strike action on December 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ZYUOfoYRjneFbDGdUm\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/the-daily-h-your-fast-smart-guide-to-the-days-biggest-headlines\/VQR5CULLQRECZP2ORSWPGDORBU\/?utm_source=nzherald&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_id=nz_cta\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/the-daily-h-your-fast-smart-guide-to-the-days-biggest-headlines\/VQR5CULLQRECZP2ORSWPGDORBU\/?utm_source=nzherald&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_id=nz_cta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up to The Daily H<\/a>, a free newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The NZPFU said the \u201cfailure\u201d played out in full public view.
