{"id":182008,"date":"2025-12-13T15:03:06","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T15:03:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/182008\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T15:03:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T15:03:06","slug":"un-environment-assembly-wraps-up-in-nairobi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/182008\/","title":{"rendered":"UN environment assembly wraps up in Nairobi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The assembly\u00a0is the\u00a0world\u2019s highest-level decision-making body for matters related to the environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 6,000 people \u2013 representing 186 countries \u2013\u00a0took part in the week-long gathering\u00a0which was\u00a0held at the headquarters of the UN Environment\u00a0Programme\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UNEP<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Wide-ranging resolutions<\/p>\n<p>The UNEA-7 resolutions cover issues such as\u00a0the sound management of minerals and materials essential to the shift to clean energy, international cooperation to combat wildfires, and greater protection of\u00a0coral reefs and glaciers.<\/p>\n<p>The ministerial declaration outlined commitment to bold actions\u00a0that drive sustainable solutions, such as promoting local and national zero-waste initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>It also called for\u00a0implementing\u202fobligations under multilateral environmental agreements and frameworks,\u00a0as well as\u00a0advancing\u202fequitable\u202fand inclusive participation in all\u202fefforts.\u202f<\/p>\n<p>Rising above differences<\/p>\n<p>In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/speech\/unea-7-brightening-beacon-environmental-multilateralism\" data-entity-type=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closing remarks<\/a>, UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen recalled that participants came to Nairobi to show the determination and solidarity needed to tackle environmental challenges that threaten to undermine economies and societies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have succeeded,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThe beacon of environmental multilateralism that rises above the fog of geopolitical differences today shines a little brighter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0noted\u00a0that the\u00a0assembly\u00a0had\u00a0also approved UNEP\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.un.org\/UNEP\/EA.7\/3\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/docs.un.org\/UNEP\/EA.7\/3\" data-mce- rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Medium-Term Strategy<\/a>\u202f(MTS)\u202ffor the next four years.<\/p>\n<p>Support UN environment agency<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0Member States\u00a0also handed new mandates to\u00a0UNEP, on top of existing ones, she urged countries to make their full contributions so that\u00a0it\u00a0can deliver \u201cwith results and impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will now return to the world outside the negotiation halls. A world in which \u2013 let us not forget amid our euphoria \u2013 people are dying, homes and livelihoods are being destroyed, economies are being damaged, and inequity is growing because action on environmental challenges has not been fast or strong enough,\u201d Ms. Andersen said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you have brightened the beacon and better lit the path forward. But we must now, together, hurry down this path to make good on our collective promise to deliver real solutions for a resilient planet and resilient people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Paris Agreement turns 10<\/p>\n<p>Friday also marked 10 years since the\u00a0adoption of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\" data-mce- rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the\u00a0Paris Agreement on climate change<\/a>, which\u00a0Ms. Andersen also highlighted in her remarks.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark treaty, signed by 194\u00a0countries\u00a0and the European Union, aims to limit global\u00a0temperature\u00a0rise\u00a0to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n<p>UN\u00a0Secretary-General\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u00a0used the anniversary\u00a0to call for\u00a0more\u00a0climate action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA decade ago, the world found the courage to adopt the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paris Agreement<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a pillar of hope for humanity,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0said\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/1999478742154919958?s=20\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/1999478742154919958?s=20\" data-mce- rel=\"nofollow\">a tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we must find courage once again. The climate crisis is one of the defining challenges of our time.
