Some good news from St Vincent’s Hospital\"Andrew<\/p>\n

Elise Worthington is still at St Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst.<\/p>\n

She reports she’s just seen another family leave the hospital in tears \u2014 but it’s good news for once, as they’d just been told their nephew, who’d been working as a security guard at the festival, was going to recover after being shot.<\/p>\n

“There are families still waiting in there to see if their family are going to make it,” the man’s uncle, Russell, told the ABC.<\/p>\n

“It’s terrible. People are in surgery and waiting to find out what’s happening. Our nephew has survived and he’s going to be alright, and he’s going to live.”<\/p>\n

“No one thought Sunday night you would be spending it at the hospital where two terrorists have gone on a massacre to try and kill as many Jewish people as possible” he added.<\/p>\n

US ‘strongly condemns’ Bondi attack, Marco Rubio says\"Andrew<\/p>\n

The United States “strongly condemns” this evening’s attack at Bondi targeting Jewish Hannukah celebrations, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n

“Antisemitism has no place in this world. Our prayers are with the victims of this horrific attack, the Jewish community, and the people of Australia,” Mr Rubio wrote on X.<\/p>\n

“These Australians are heroes and their bravery has saved lives,” he said.<\/p>\n

It’s been more than five hours since the situation in Bondi started to unfold, but there’s still a heavy police presence at the scene.<\/p>\n

The area where the shooting took place has been declared safe, but is now officially a crime scene, as the operation shifts from an emergency response to an investigation.<\/p>\n

ABC reporter Digby Werthmuller is still on the scene, and says the locals have gone home, but there are still armed police “making sure that their presence is still seen, and felt, in this area tonight”.<\/p>\n

The next update from police is expected to take place tomorrow morning, he says.<\/p>\n

It’s almost midnight in NSW, and St Vincent’s Hospital at Darlinghurst \u2014 about 4 kilometres from Bondi \u2014 is still incredibly crowded and chaotic, the ABC’s Elise Worthington reports from the scene.<\/p>\n

“People who have been in the hospital have described it as really like a warzone in there,” she says.<\/p>\n

“The number of casualties coming through, the family members seeing patients being wheeled around, patients going to theatre, it’s been, really, a traumatic and difficult and chaotic [evening].”<\/p>\n

Federal Opposition Leader Sussan Ley issued a statement on the Bondi shootings earlier tonight.<\/p>\n

“Australians are in deep mourning tonight, with hateful violence striking at the heart of an iconic Australian community, a place we all know so well and love, Bondi,” the statement reads.<\/p>\n

“The loss of life from this attack is significant, and I join with the prime minister in urging all Australians to follow official advice from police and relevant authorities.<\/p>\n

“This attack occurred as our Jewish community came together at the Chanukah by the Sea celebration. This was a celebration of peace and hope for the future, severed by hate.<\/p>\n

“My heart is with Australia’s Jewish community tonight, particularly those in the eastern suburbs of Sydney \u2014 people I know well.<\/p>\n

“Today we stand together as Australians against hate in this moment of profound tragedy and shock.<\/p>\n

Bondi church has been helping people ‘confused and in grief’\"Annabel<\/p>\n

Pastor Matt Graham was in the middle of a service at Bondi Anglican Church, just 100 metres from the scene of the shooting, when the attack broke out.<\/p>\n

“We noticed people sort of running past the entrance to our church and one lady came in and she just looked petrified,” he told ABC News Channel.<\/p>\n

“Then she kept on running and then there were just more people running and we’re like, ‘What is going on?’<\/p>\n

“And then we just heard more gunshots. Just bang bang, bang.<\/p>\n

“We’re like, ‘OK, something big is happening right now.’ It was crazy.”<\/p>\n

\"AMatt Graham is a pastor at Bondi Anglican Church<\/p>\n

Matt said the church then went into lockdown while a few people went outside to help.<\/p>\n

Once it was all clear, he said they opened up the church and “we’ve had people here all night”.<\/p>\n

“People are just gradually moving away from there and people have been trying to find family members,” he said.<\/p>\n

“People are confused and in grief.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had a number of people wandering in and going, ‘My car’s down there and I can’t get home.’<\/p>\n

“So we’ve got people who have been shuttling people to their homes all across Sydney … we’re getting people walking in constantly, just needing a bit of food or a hug or a prayer.<\/p>\n

“I think we’re going to be open all week … just being here in the community and seeing how we can help.”<\/p>\n

Government ‘looking to get on the front foot’ on antisemitism issue\"Andrew<\/p>\n

The ABC’s national affairs correspondent Jane Norman points out Jillian Segal’s plan to combat antisemitism was released in July, but the government is yet to hand down its full response.<\/p>\n

That being said, the PM’s earlier comments \u2014 and the speed with which he convened security services to confirm the nature of the attack \u2014 indicate he is looking to get on the front foot on this issue, she says.<\/p>\n

The PM said he was still very much committed to acting on the report’s recommendations \u2014 one of which is to bolster security at Jewish institutions, such as places of worship and schools.<\/p>\n

We’re getting more reaction from various MPs.<\/p>\n

Greens\u00a0federal senator Mehreen Faruqi\u00a0said her heart “filled with dread” at the news of the attack.<\/p>\n

“I’m absolutely devastated by the horrific violence at Bondi beach tonight,” she said.<\/p>\n

“This is an appalling and unforgivable act of violence.<\/p>\n

“My thoughts are especially with the Jewish community.”<\/p>\n

NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper called the attack “horrific”.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“What is clear is that the Chanukah Festival and our Jewish community was targeted,” he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a despicable and cowardly act that has no place in our country. It is an attack on the very fabric of our nation.”<\/p>\n

He offered “deepest sympathies and condolences” to those affected.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would also like to sincerely thank our first responders and brave members of the public who assisted the innocent victims of today’s attack, and showed the very best of our nation,” he said.<\/p>\n

Federal politicians react to attack\"Georgie<\/p>\n

Federal politicians from across the spectrum are responding with a mix of horror, anger and disbelief at the tragedy unfolding at Bondi Beach tonight.<\/p>\n

On the opposition side, MPs were quick to call it an attack on Jewish Australians, with senator Dave Sharma, a former ambassador to Israel, labelling it an \u201cappalling and grotesque act of violence seemingly directed at our Jewish community\u201d.<\/p>\n

Liberal backbencher Andrew Hastie described the attack as \u201ccold-blooded murder\u201d and said: \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure we can guess what motivated it.”<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not the Australia we know and love, and something has got to change,\u201d he said in a social media post.<\/p>\n

Liberal senator\u00a0Jacinta Nampijinpa Price said tonight\u2019s attack had been \u201cforeseeable\u201d, linking it to the \u201cthe sordid scenes on the steps of the Sydney Opera House on 9 October 2023\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The opposition has previously been critical of the Albanese government’s handling of a wave of antisemitic attacks, largely sparked by the Gaza War.<\/p>\n

Australia’s special envoy to combat antisemitism, Jillian Segal, says the attack “marks the worst fear of the Australian Jewish community becoming reality”.<\/p>\n

“A peaceful Chanukah gathering at Bondi Beach was attacked.<\/p>\n

“Images emerging tonight are chilling and echo the horrors Australians hoped they would never see here.”<\/p>\n

She said this attack “did not come without warning”, referencing protests at the Sydney Opera House and across the Sydney Harbour Bridge.<\/p>\n

“These are Australian icons. Targeting them is deliberate. This is not random. It is an attack on Australia.”<\/p>\n

She said it was time for action to be taken.<\/p>\n

“To ordinary Australians, this moment demands clarity. What once seemed distant or uncomfortable can no longer be ignored. Taunts from the Opera House steps, synagogues set alight and now massacres at a celebration form a clear pattern.<\/p>\n

“This is not the Australia we know and it cannot be the Australia we accept.<\/p>\n

“Australia responded decisively after Port Arthur in 1996. This moment requires the same action. Words are no longer enough.<\/p>\n

Elise Worthington says she was at Bondi Beach this afternoon for lunch, and it was “absolutely stunning”.<\/p>\n

“Just beautiful, filled with families, a sunny day \u2014 and we do sadly now know that there is one child amongst those people who have been hospitalised, and it’s just devastating,” she says.<\/p>\n

“There were so many people at the beach as well as at this festival. Lots of families, children. There’s a beautiful playground right there.<\/p>\n

“I think there’ll be a lot of families holding their children tight tonight and really, really upset about what’s happened here.”<\/p>\n

Muslim groups condemn deadly Bondi shooting\"Annabel<\/p>\n

Muslim groups have condemned the terrorist attack in Bondi, extending condolences and support to victims’ loved ones.<\/p>\n

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Australia (ACMA) said it is “shocked and saddened at the loss of innocent lives”.<\/p>\n

“We are heartbroken by the brutality of this attack on a peaceful community gathering,” ACMA national president Imam Inam-ul-Haq Kauser said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“Such acts of violence, targeting innocent people and aiming to sow division and fear, have absolutely no place in Australia. An attack on any community is an attack on all of us.”<\/p>\n

Earlier tonight, the Australian National Imams Council shared a statement of solidarity with victims and all affected communities.<\/p>\n

“Those responsible must be held fully accountable and face the full force of the law,” the council said.<\/p>\n

“This is a moment for all Australians, including the Australian Muslim community, to stand together in unity, compassion, and solidarity, rejecting violence in all its forms and affirming our shared commitment to social harmony and the safety of all Australians.”<\/p>\n
