DCAL\u2014a lifetime achievement medal that has been awarded to Toni Morrison, Robert Caro and Edmund White, among others, is awarded to \u201ca person who has enriched our literary heritage over a life of service or a corpus of work,\u201d according to the National Book Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-217179\" class=\"wp-image-217179 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/George-Saunders-on-campus-564x400.jpg\" alt=\"George Saunders, man in grey jacket standing on campus with Hall of Languages and fall foliage in the background\" width=\"564\" height=\"400\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-217179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George Saunders on campus<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"8gqeg\">\u201cGeorge Saunders is the author of more than a dozen books\u2014from short story and essay collections to novels and a children\u2019s book\u2014that offer an incisive, comedic and urgent perspective on our world,\u201d says David Steinberger, chair of the board of directors of the National Book Foundation. \u201cThroughout his career, Saunders has captured the imagination of readers and mentored countless writers in and outside of the classroom. It is our honor to celebrate his oeuvre and creative generosity with the 2025 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"amvk0\">\u201cCongratulations to George on this well-deserved honor. This achievement is yet another example of the high caliber of faculty nurturing our students,\u201d says Behzad Mortazavi, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"8ri1l\">Saunders has earned numerous accolades throughout his literary career. His novel \u201cLincoln in the Bardo\u201d won the 2017 Man Booker Prize; his short story collection \u201cLiberation Day\u201d was named one of President Barack Obama\u2019s favorite books of 2022; and three of his works were featured in The New York Times\u2019 list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/books\/best-books-21st-century.html?smtyp=cur&amp;smid=tw-nytimes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">100 Best Books of the 21st Century<\/a>. Saunders\u2019 upcoming novel, \u201cVigil,\u201d set to be published by Random House on Jan. 27, 2026, follows oil company CEO K.J.
