Coetzee, a Year 13 student at Tauranga Boys\u2019 College, was driving to work experience in Kawerau on State Highway 2 at Pikowai when he collided head-on with a truck<\/a> on June 15, 2022.<\/p>\n

Coroner Ian Telford\u2019s findings, released today, found Coetzee\u2019s fatigue was the primary contributory factor in the accident. <\/p>\n

He found Coetzee died on impact from multiple blunt traumatic injuries.<\/p>\n

Hanekom told the Bay of Plenty Times that this time of year was \u201cvery difficult\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis birthday\u2019s on the 26th of December, so we normally \u2026 go away. We don\u2019t do Christmas anymore.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot that we don\u2019t believe, it\u2019s just that it\u2019s hard. Everyone has got their children with them, giving them hugs and things like that.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve gone through all these phases – sad, cross, and that. I\u2019m now at the stage where I\u2019m appreciating the fact that I had the honour to have him in my life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll live with this forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"TaurangaTauranga teenager Keanan Coetzee died in a car crash on June 15, 2022. His parents Werner and Vanessa Hanekom regularly visit the accident site on SH2 at Pikowai.<\/p>\n

Hanekom said his son drove past a rest spot and did not stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an adult, you\u2019ll know you\u2019re tired, and it\u2019s more important to be alert than to get to your job.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a child, it was his first work experience, and he just wanted to impress everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

He and Vanessa changed the name of their personalised printing business to KC Printing in their son\u2019s memory and rebranded its T-shirts as Keanan Coetzee Apparel.<\/p>\n

He said clients who had dealt with Coetzee, even just once, praised his \u201camazing\u201d manners.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven till today, people still talk about him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"KeananKeanan Coetzee’s nickname was Boerseun, Afrikaans for “Farm Boy”.<\/p>\n

Hanekom said \u201cmany cars\u201d in Tauranga had a \u201cBoerseun\u201d sticker on them, which was Coetzee\u2019s nickname. It meant \u201cfarm boy\u201d in Afrikaans, and denoted someone of character with \u201cold school\u201d manners and respect. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kids – they want to honour him.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said Keanan was a \u201ctrue boerseun\u201d.<\/p>\n

Teen \u2018likely\u2019 fell asleep at the wheel <\/p>\n

In his findings, Telford said Coetzee, who held a full licence, left home at 6.39am on the day of the crash.<\/p>\n

The collision happened at 7.13am.<\/p>\n

A toxicology analysis found no alcohol or drugs in Coetzee\u2019s blood.<\/p>\n

The Serious Crash Unit found several factors indicating that fatigue was the primary cause.<\/p>\n

Witness evidence showed Coetzee had gone to bed about midnight and woke at 6am.<\/p>\n

His sleep pattern had recently changed because he had started work experience.<\/p>\n

He continued to go to bed at his usual time but woke between one and three hours earlier, and had told his family he was feeling sleepy as a result. <\/p>\n

He would also nap during the day.<\/p>\n

Video footage showed evidence of \u201cfatigue-related behaviour\u201d, with Coetzee \u201clane weaving\u201d before the crash.<\/p>\n

A witness following Coetzee\u2019s car had been concerned about his driving \u2013 \u201cprimarily drifting\u201d \u2013 and started filming and hooting.<\/p>\n

Coetzee\u2019s car swung \u201cwide to the left\u201d on the corner immediately before the crash. <\/p>\n

It then recovered but started \u201cdrifting into the opposing lane\u201d, despite the oncoming vehicle.<\/p>\n

Coetzee\u2019s rear brake light illuminated a \u201csplit second before impact\u201d, indicating he may have woken at that point.<\/p>\n

Other \u201cfatigue-related\u201d factors included the time of the crash, it being head-on, and involving one occupant.<\/p>\n

The coroner found Coetzee\u2019s death was \u201clikely\u201d caused by him falling asleep at the wheel.<\/p>\n

He considered it likely that Coetzee had \u201ccumulative sleep deprivation\u201d, being \u201croutinely more fatigued than usual\u201d with \u201csignificantly restricted opportunity for rest\u201d before the crash.<\/p>\n

Telford had recently commissioned a report on the effects of sleep deprivation on driving.<\/p>\n

\u201cDriving while fatigued affects lane keeping, speed control, reaction times, and hazard perception \u2013 impairments comparable to, or greater than, alcohol intoxication.\u201d<\/p>\n

Studies confirmed that driving after five or fewer hours\u2019 sleep roughly doubled the risk of a crash.<\/p>\n

\u201cChronic sleep restriction amplifies these effects and increases the risk of microsleeps.<\/p>\n

\u201cTragically, this pattern mirrors what happened to Keanan, underscoring the critical importance of never driving while fatigued.\u201d<\/p>\n

Telford referred drivers to the New Zealand Transport Agency webpage on driver fatigue.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you feel tired, don\u2019t drive. Don\u2019t risk your life or the lives of others.\u201d<\/p>\n
