The centre houses the Barbican Art Gallery, the Curve, and the Level 2 gallery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The City of London Corporation has contributed \u00a3191m, which represents around 80% of the funding needed for the first five-year phase (the remainder is due to be raised through a fundraising campaign).<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cThe City of London Corporation has approved a concentrated period of works\u00a0which\u00a0will mean\u00a0that\u00a0the majority of\u00a0our spaces will be under construction and not accessible for\u00a0roughly one\u00a0year,\u00a0between the end of June 2028 and the end of June 2029. This approach ensures that Renewal\u00a0will\u00a0be delivered safely,\u00a0on time and on budget,\u201d a Barbican spokesperson says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Asked if off-site art programmes are planned during the closure, the spokesperson adds: \u201cNow we have the green light on the delivery plan for the Renewal programme, we\u2019re looking at how we collaborate with partners differently and go beyond our walls, across art forms, during construction and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The Barbican\u2019s cinemas on Beech Street will remain open during the one-year closure while the adjoining residential estate will remain publicly accessible. The Barbican, a non-profit organisation, was opened in 1982 by Queen Elizabeth II, who hailed it as \u201cone of the wonders of the modern world\u201d; the centre celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2032.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Next year, the Barbican will present the first UK retrospective of the Colombian artist Beatriz Gonz\u00e1lez (25 February-10 May). The first UK public commission by Colombian artist\u00a0Delcy Morelos will also be unveiled at the Barbican\u2019s outdoor Sculpture Court next year (15 May-31\u00a0July\u00a02026).
