It can be really challenging to figure out how to pay for the removal operation, and if someone is living on board, law enforcement has to balance the boat\u2019s potential hazards with removing shelter from someone who may not have another place to live. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">OPB \u201cOregon Field Guide\u201d producer Noah Thomas joins us to talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2025\/10\/02\/oregon-derelict-vehicles-waterways-boats-livaboards-multnomah-portland-columbia-willamette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2025\/10\/02\/oregon-derelict-vehicles-waterways-boats-livaboards-multnomah-portland-columbia-willamette\/\">the reporting he did<\/a> on ADVs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">We\u2019ll meet people who work on removing these boats from the water, someone who lives on a boat he bought at an auction for $110 and a community organizer who paddles her kayak around the Willamette bringing food and other supplies to liveaboards. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/shows\/evergreen-podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Listen to all episodes of The Evergreen podcast here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A group of abandoned and derelict boats at a marina in Newport, Ore., on March 31, 2025.
