{"id":185510,"date":"2025-12-15T22:53:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T22:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/185510\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T22:53:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T22:53:11","slug":"sam-shaw-sets-new-auckland-to-wellington-record-following-lachlan-morton-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/185510\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Shaw sets new Auckland to Wellington record, following Lachlan Morton controversy\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Samuel Shaw has broken the record for the fastest known time between Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand, covering the 638 kilometres in 17 hours and 21 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The mountain biker finished on Monday evening (New Zealand time) and his time beat the previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/routes-and-rides\/all-about-fastest-known-times\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FKT<\/a> of 18 hours, 26 minutes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/laclan-morton-breaks-auckland-to-wellington-record\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set in February 2025 <\/a>by Lachlan Morton, making Shaw the first rider to crack the challenge in under 18 hours.<\/p>\n<p>According to Strava, Shaw completed the ride with an average speed of 36.8kph and a weighted average power of 277 watts.<\/p>\n<p>Morton&#8217;s attempt at the record, which was completed last year, was the inspiration for Shaw&#8217;s ride.<\/p>\n<p>Morton&#8217;s ride was documented in a YouTube video by Rapha, the then clothing sponsor of his EF Education pro team. But that video caused controversy by concentrating on Brian Fleck, who held the record between 1983 and 1984, when it was taken back by the previous record holder, Brian Lambert.<\/p>\n<p>There was no mention in the video of Lambert, whose record stood for 41 years, prompting Rapha to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/rapha-apologises-over-lachlan-mortons-auckland-to-wellington-record\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issue an apology<\/a> to the family of Lambert, who died of Parkinson\u2019s Disease in 2022. His family accused Rapha of a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/family-thank-rapha-for-owning-up-to-false-narrative\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">false narrative<\/a>&#8216; in the video.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulated by Lambert&#8217;s son<\/p>\n<p>Brian Lambert\u2019s son, James, congratulated Shaw on the new record, which has yet to be ratified by Cycling New Zealand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrilliant ride. And smashed through the magical 18 hour mark our father went on and on about being possible for years,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur family congratulates Sam on a truly exceptional effort.
