He was attacked about a decade ago, as he went out fishing on a small raft through the mangroves. Living in the Sundarbans, the <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/798\/#:~:text=The%20Sundarbans%20Reserve%20Forest%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">planet\u2019s largest mangrove forest<\/a> which straddles West Bengal, in India, and southern Bangladesh, it\u2019s a risk communities increasingly face.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000j3b6ncidkvsjj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The UNESCO World Heritage site is a labyrinth of tidal waterways, mudflats and islands, home to an astonishing range of endangered species, including river dolphins, the Indian python and the Bengal tiger.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000k3b6nickaq7v2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unlike most big cats, these tigers live an amphibious lifestyle, swimming long distances to hunt fish and crabs. There are an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/bforest.portal.gov.bd\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/bforest.portal.gov.bd\/page\/2df7f2df_fa89_453f_8058_7efa3bd806f1\/2024-10-08-16-54-b980bccfac92f65a091dcdb97b76f8dc.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">125 living across the Sundarban region<\/a> of Bangladesh, and around <a href=\"https:\/\/ntca.gov.in\/assets\/uploads\/Reports\/AITM\/Summary_report_AITE_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">88 on the Indian side<\/a>. But a combination of shrinking tiger habitat due to deforestation and growing human populations has led to an increase in human-tiger conflict, according to conservationists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000l3b6ncf8cm0yv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is more competition for food resources, says Saurav Malhotra, a project leader at international nonprofit Conservation International. Men, who venture deep into the forest to hunt for fish, are disproportionately attacked.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/gettyimages-97016878.jpg\" alt=\"A Bengal tiger wearing a radio collar is pictured on the bank of a river in the Sundarbans, having been released by wildlife workers after being caught too close to human habitation.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1928\" width=\"2777\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000m3b6nezn1pe0f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Official records of these killings are sparse \u2013\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/05\/bangladesh-tries-fences-to-tackle-growing-human-tiger-conflict-in-sundarbans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">one estimate<\/a> suggests that 300 people and 46 tigers have been killed in human-tiger conflicts since 2000 \u2013\u2013 but there is lasting evidence of their deaths in the number of \u201ctiger widows\u201d that have been left behind.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000n3b6ngeniqh7v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These women, like Mondal, have traditionally been treated as outcasts and blamed for their husbands\u2019 deaths. They are called \u201cswami khejos\u201d\u2014 which translates as \u201chusband eaters\u201d in Bengali \u2014 which prevents them from traditional occupations like farming and fishing. The stigma not only leaves women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/tiger-widows-of-the-sundarbans-how-religion-and-myth-stigmatise-human-wildlife-conflict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">without livelihoods<\/a> but government aid. Many of the tiger attack deaths result after illegal entry into the forest, so they\u2019re disqualified from financial compensation, leaving them with little to care for themselves and their children.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000o3b6np2yniqxr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A new conservation initiative targeted at tiger widows hopes to help these families reestablish their places within the communities, providing them with a source of income while restoring the environment they \u2013\u2013 and the tigers \u2013\u2013 depend on.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000q3b6nnangyw72@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Focused on the Jharkhali region of the Sundarbans, along the Matla River, Shahif Ali, a 26-year-old fellow at i-Behind The Ink (IBTI), a social enterprise that runs a <a href=\"https:\/\/ibehindtheink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">youth rewilding program<\/a>, is leading the effort from the ground. He has brought together tiger widows, along with other local women, to restore 100 hectares of mangrove forests. This week, they are planting more than 100,000 saplings across 40 hectares of coastline between the two villages Laskarpur and Vivekananda Palli.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000r3b6nhv18oaxx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Currently, these villages are vulnerable to rising seas and storm surges, protected by a single embankment, says Ali. \u201cIf the embankment breaks, the entire village can be destroyed: homes, agriculture, lands, everything.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000s3b6ngywanpj7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Native mangrove saplings that have been grown and cared for by the women over the last six months are planted in front of the embankment, helping to restore the dense forest that was cleared to make way for farms and fishing, and provide an extra defense against the violent cyclones that are becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/worldheritageoutlook.iucn.org\/explore-sites\/sundarbans-national-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more intense<\/a> and frequent with climate change.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000t3b6nh1rf49dd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The forest will also act as a barrier against increasing water salinity caused by flooding, which threatens the health of mangroves, destroys soil and crops, and disrupts fish populations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000u3b6n1ragt7ps@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The idea is that with time, fish populations will rebound, providing more food both for humans and tigers, resulting in less human-tiger conflict.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/05-20251211190850123.jpg\" alt=\"In the Sundarbans, fishermen who venture deep into the mangrove forests are at risk of tiger attacks.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"902\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000v3b6n84h9kf2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mondal is one of the seven tiger widows currently involved in the project, out of a total of 59 women. Twenty more widows are joining the initiative later this month, and Ali says he has interest from at least 75 more. The challenge is that the women are scattered across the region and safe travel options are limited, plus it takes time to build their trust, he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000w3b6n36g1y8d4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The women are paid 300 rupees ($3.30) a day for the work, which may not sound like a lot but \u201cbrings real change,\u201d says Ali. \u201cIt\u2019s the difference between ignoring an illness and getting treatment; between skipping meals and feeding their children properly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000x3b6ne47pjz4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Across the Sundarbans, on both the Bangladeshi and Indian side, similar efforts to restore mangroves through livelihood programs have taken place, including others targeted at tiger widows, like the community-led initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/india.mongabay.com\/2021\/06\/mangrove-plantation-drives-to-protect-jharkhali-from-cyclones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jharkhali Sabuj Bahini<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Restoring forest and lives<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f1000z3b6nk55pbmnq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The mangrove restoration forms part of Conservation International\u2019s larger \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/projects\/mountains-to-mangroves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mountains to Mangrove<\/a>\u201d initiative, which spans the Himalayas to the Sundarbans, aiming to protect and restore 1 million hectares of forest over this area. It has one of the densest human populations of any biodiversity hotspot on Earth, says Malhotra, and is facing huge challenges from climate change and deforestation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f100103b6nbu2bu6q4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 100 hectares of mangrove restoration in the Sundarbans is a tiny proportion of the overall target, but Malhotra hopes the project will scale and provide a blueprint for restoration across the wider area.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1s30f100113b6nzt0vrxmx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe ultimate goal is to bring mangrove ecosystems back, because bringing mangrove ecosystems back is the most holistic way of creating resilience against all the challenges of climate change,\u201d he says.
