Media Release<\/a><\/p>\nHarness Racing New Zealand (HRNZ) has responded with a package of sulky safety measures following the recent race fall involving Nathan Williamson.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe well-being of drivers, horses, and all participants remains paramount. HRNZ recognises that the incident has prompted important questions and discussion across the industry,” says HRNZ’s Head of Racing and Wagering Matthew Peden.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe consider it appropriate to outline the steps currently being taken to review and strengthen sulky safety practices.”<\/p>\n
HRNZ is working closely with the Racing Integrity Board (RIB) and the New Zealand Harness Trainer Driver Association (NZHTDA) to review a number of existing practices relating to sulky safety and compliance.<\/p>\n
Particular attention will be paid to checking the integrity of welded joints.<\/p>\n
In conjunction with sulky inspectors, HRNZ will provide free sulky inspections to any owner who wishes to have their sulky checked in the immediate future.<\/p>\n
While these inspections are not compulsory, HRNZ strongly encourages sulky owners to take advantage of this opportunity.<\/p>\n
Inspection availability :<\/p>\n
The following arrangements have been confirmed:<\/p>\n
Cambridge \u2013 18 December: The Sulky Shop will be available throughout the race meeting
Methven \u2013 18 December: Chris Morrison will be available throughout the race meeting
Alexandra Park \u2013 19 December: Bernie Hackett will be available throughout the race meeting
Ashburton \u2013 21 December: Chris Morrison will be available, with limited capacity<\/p>\n
HRNZ is currently working through a potential solution to provide similar inspection opportunities in Southland. For the Central Districts, arrangements are also being progressed for Palmerston North\u2019s January meeting to ensure participants in that region have access to the same opportunity.<\/p>\n
HRNZ is also investigating the viability of moving to annual Warrants of Fitness for sulkies, rather than the current bi-annual requirement.<\/p>\n
This work is ongoing and will involve consultation with key stakeholders to ensure any changes are practical, effective, and improve safety outcomes.<\/p>\n
This initiative has been endorsed by both the Racing Integrity Board and the New Zealand Harness Trainer Driver Association.<\/p>\n
HRNZ remains committed to working collaboratively with industry partners to continuously improve safety standards across harness racing.<\/p>\n
