The SAG Awards, another important Hollywood awards gala, which recently rebranded as The Actors Awards, has already moved to Netflix.<\/p>\n
YouTube accounts for the biggest share of television viewing time in the United States of any streaming platform, dwarfing even Netflix.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis collaboration will leverage YouTube\u2019s vast reach and infuse the Oscars and other Academy programming with innovative opportunities for engagement while honouring our legacy,\u201d said the Academy.<\/p>\n
Financial terms of the new Oscars deal were not disclosed.<\/p>\n
Industry website Deadline said \u201cthe amount that YouTube was willing to pay didn\u2019t make sense for Disney\u201d, citing anonymous insiders.<\/p>\n
\u2018Proud home\u2019 <\/p>\n
An ABC Entertainment spokesperson told AFP: \u201cABC has been the proud home to the Oscars for more than half a century.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe look forward to the next three telecasts, including the show\u2019s centennial celebration in 2028, and wish the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continued success.\u201d<\/p>\n
Like Hollywood more broadly, the Oscars have endured a challenging time in recent years, as younger generations\u2019 viewing habits shift.<\/p>\n
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Oscars ratings sank as low as 10.4 million.<\/p>\n
The most recent Oscars were viewed by 19.69 million people \u2013 the highest in five years \u2013 as the ceremony was shown live simultaneously on Disney\u2019s streamer Hulu with ABC.<\/p>\n
But the Hulu stream suffered technical glitches that left some viewers unable to see the final prizes.<\/p>\n
The Academy Awards telecast regularly topped 40 million just over a decade ago.<\/p>\n
