{"id":194073,"date":"2025-12-20T23:44:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T23:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/194073\/"},"modified":"2025-12-20T23:44:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T23:44:08","slug":"destructive-storms-forecast-to-hit-victoria-with-extreme-fire-danger-in-north-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/194073\/","title":{"rendered":"Destructive storms forecast to hit Victoria with extreme fire danger in north-west"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Victorians are being told to brace for wild and dangerous weather on Sunday, with potentially destructive storms forecast for some parts of the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected across Victoria, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), while an extreme fire warning is in place for the Mallee region in the state&#8217;s north-west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The State Control Centre (SCC) is urging communities in Victoria&#8217;s north and north-east to remain on alert for volatile weather as a low-pressure system builds across the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This includes communities such as Mildura, Swan Hill, Euroa, Shepparton, Mansfield, Wangaratta, Corryong and Albury-Wodonga,&#8221; the SCC said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In these areas, very heavy rain and damaging or destructive winds are possible. (Twitter: Shane Whitley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The storms are expected to bring 15 to 25 millimetres of rain to parts of the state, with 30mm possible in some areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Sunday morning BOM forecaster Lincoln Trainor encouraged Victorians to stay across warnings and weather alerts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It is a big storm day widespread across Victoria \u2026 becoming severe in the afternoon across the north,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t have many of these \u2026 from about 1pm we&#8217;re going to see damaging to destructive winds, possible large hail and intense rainfall.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Stay up to date with the latest emergency information via <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/emergency.vic.gov.au\/respond\/#\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">VicEmergency<\/a> and <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/emergency\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC Emergency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said wind gusts of greater than 90 kilometres per hour and up to 120km\/h were possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Total Fire Ban is in place today for the Mallee district until midnight, while a high fire-danger rating is in place in the Northern and Wimmera districts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-20\/bom-christmas-weather-forecast\/106163070\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Extreme weather ahead of Christmas<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australia is experiencing a smorgasbord of extreme weather in the lead-up to Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The SCC has urged people to take care on the roads, as wet conditions, fallen trees, debris and downed powerlines could make driving dangerous<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If you&#8217;re in the north-west, you need a fire plan. And if you&#8217;re in the north-east, you need a storm plan,&#8221; SES state agency commander Alistair Drayton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Stay informed today, especially if you&#8217;re driving.
