Glen Boss admits it still hasn’t fully sunk in.<\/p>\n
This year marked 20 years since Makybe Diva won her third-successive Melbourne Cup, etching both horse and jockey into Australian folklore forever.<\/p>\n
“Even now, I look back and wonder how we did that,” Boss said. “I’m sometimes lost for words, even now. But that’s what the Melbourne Cup does for you. It takes you to a place you never thought imaginable.”<\/p>\n

What catches Boss most by surprise is the impact the win had on others, not himself.<\/p>\n
Whether he’s taking the Melbourne Cup on tour, speaking at a function, or simply out and about in public \u2026 everybody seems to have a Makybe Diva story.<\/p>\n
“People can vividly tell me where they were,” Boss said. “You know, ‘I was at my mate’s place at a BBQ’, or ‘I was at this pub’ – or wherever it was they tell me. Makybe Diva left a very big footprint in Australian sport, in Australian history.<\/p>\n
“It is not just a racing event, it was a moment that captured a lot of people’s imagination, not just in Australia, but around the world.”<\/p>\n
Robbie Dolan was one of those people.<\/p>\n
An interview Boss gave several years ago when speaking about Makybe Diva’s success was ringing in Dolan’s ears when the field started to ramp things up in the 2024 edition of the race.<\/p>\n
“He (Boss) said in the Melbourne Cup there is always two waves and that the first wave will start to make their run around the 800-metre mark and I remember, for some reason, that was in my head at that moment of the race,” Dolan recalled.<\/p>\n
Dolan made his move with the second group, a decision that ultimately led to his life changing forever as Knight’s Choice caused one of the biggest boilovers in the Melbourne Cup’s 165-year history.<\/p>\n
“The first hour after winning the Melbourne Cup is just a complete blur,” Dolan said. “You’re pulled around from place to place doing a million interviews. There are cameras everywhere and you’re speaking to so many different people.<\/p>\n
“Your adrenaline has peaked from winning that race and then it just sits at that peak level for the next hour. When I finally took off all my gear and had a shower I remember just going ‘holy f*** – I can’t believe that’s just happened’. I don’t think it will ever sink in.”<\/p>\n
