This is the second time this year my brother has asked me for money.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s a couple months behind on his mortgage.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, I said no as a policy to never lend family money.<\/p>\n
The very next weekend, he went skiing anyway.<\/p>\n
This man knew that his brother had a gambling problem.<\/p>\n
Anyway, he\u2019s asking again. I know he has a gambling problem.<\/p>\n
He just went on vacation a week ago and was telling me about some bad sports gambling beats he had this week.<\/p>\n
Then, he asked me for money for his mortgage and laid the guilt on pretty thick.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cMy kids deserve a roof over their heads.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also said, \u201cYou have investments,\u201d and, \u201cGet off your high horse this one time.\u201d<\/p>\n
He and his wife are also in a financial crunch as he was laid off at work.<\/p>\n
Well, I\u2019ve recently been laid off and have a newborn baby.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re using savings to spend a bunch of time with him before getting back into the job market.<\/p>\n
I also discovered my parents have given them money twice this past year.<\/p>\n
It was a significant amount that should theoretically be up to seven months of his mortgage.<\/p>\n
He doesn\u2019t want to enable his brother, yet he feels guilty for not helping him.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve decided not to enable a gambler or his bad decisions.<\/p>\n
I still hold some guilt over the possibility his house gets foreclosed on and his three kids are out of a home.<\/p>\n
But I don\u2019t think money here helps his problem, even though he\u2019s sure he\u2019s just \u201cdown on his luck.\u201d<\/p>\n
