looks stunning in this tasty Christmas photo from the Hubble Telescope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"e09b4604-bdf3-4e54-af82-78b6e8274905\">Using the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>, astronomers have imaged the largest and most chaotic site of planetary birth humanity has ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing like a stunning cosmic bat, this <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/astronomers-discover-baby-planets-taking-their-first-steps-in-nearby-stellar-nursery-images\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/astronomers-discover-baby-planets-taking-their-first-steps-in-nearby-stellar-nursery-images\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protoplanetary disk<\/a>, located around 1,000 light-years away, stretches out for around 400 billion years, around 40 times the size of our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>, out to the ring of cometary bodies known as the Kuiper belt.<\/p>\n<p>This protoplanetary disk with an infant star at its heart has the official designation IRAS 23077+6707, but also has the incredible nickname &#8220;Dracula\u2019s Chivito.&#8221; Image Processing: Joseph DePasquale (STScI))<\/p>\n<p id=\"13841801-fb1f-41a1-a213-9a90442f3589\">&#8220;The level of detail we&#8217;re seeing is rare in protoplanetary disk imaging, and these new Hubble images show that planet nurseries can be much more active and chaotic than we expected,&#8221; team leader Kristina Monsch of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard &amp; Smithsonian (CfA) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/hubble\/nasas-hubble-reveals-largest-found-chaotic-birthplace-of-planets\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/hubble\/nasas-hubble-reveals-largest-found-chaotic-birthplace-of-planets\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cWe&#8217;re seeing this disk nearly edge-on, and its wispy upper layers and asymmetric features are especially striking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"13841801-fb1f-41a1-a213-9a90442f3589-1\">Monsch added that both Hubble and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21925-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21925-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst.htmlhttps:\/\/www.space.com\/21925-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> (JWST) have glimpsed similar structures in other disks, but Dracula&#8217;s Chivito provides astronomers with an exceptional perspective that allows them to trace its substructures in visible light at an unprecedented level of detail.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This makes the system a unique, new laboratory for studying planet formation and the environments where it happens,&#8221; Image Processing: Joseph DePasquale (STScI))<\/p>\n<p id=\"848e512b-86f9-4195-8d5e-0f9e58b889fc\">The unsymmetrical appearance of the gas and dust lanes in Dracula&#8217;s Chivito in this stunning <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble<\/a> image indicates that dynamic processes are occurring within the disk as its morphology is gradually shaped by interactions with its surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were stunned to see how asymmetric this disk is,&#8221; team member Joshua Bennett Lovell, also an astronomer at the CfA, said. &#8220;Hubble has given us a front row seat to the chaotic processes that are shaping disks as they build new planets \u2014 processes that we don&#8217;t yet fully understand but can now study in a whole new way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Not only does this give scientists a better picture of planetary birth, but Dracula&#8217;s Chivito also offers a look at what the solar system may have looked like when it was forming planets <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4.6 billion years ago<\/a>, albeit on a much larger scale.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In theory, IRAS 23077+6707 could host a vast planetary system,\u201d said Monsch. \u201cWhile planet formation may differ in such massive environments, the underlying processes are likely similar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now, we have more questions than answers, but these new images are a starting point for understanding how planets form over time and in different environments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By the way, in case you are wondering, the &#8220;Dracula&#8221; element of this protoplanetary disk&#8217;s nickname is a playful reference to the Transvaniian heritage of one of the team members behind this research.
