\u201cChina\u2019s targeting of the semiconductor industry for dominance is unreasonable and burdens or restricts US commerce, and thus, is actionable,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
The announcement on the new tariffs follows a year-long investigation<\/a> by Washington into \u201cunfair trade practices\u201d in China\u2019s exports of \u201clegacy,\u201d or older-technology chips to the US, launched by former President Joe Biden\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n Biden already imposed an\u00a0additional 50% tariff\u00a0on Chinese semiconductors that started on January 1, 2025.<\/p>\n The\u00a0chip\u00a0industry is also awaiting the Trump administration\u2019s decision on a much broader tariff investigation into global\u00a0chip\u00a0imports.<\/p>\n That probe, under the country\u2019s national security statute, could heap more tariffs on Chinese semiconductors and a vast array of electronics devices containing them from all countries. US officials have privately said, however, that those levies might not come into effect anytime soon.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Beijing still fuming<\/p>\n Washington\u2019s decision to postpone the current lot of tariffs follows extensive negotiations with Beijing and a meeting<\/a> between Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in South Korea in October.<\/p>\n The negotiations aimed to delay some of China\u2019s most extensive licensing rules<\/a> to control exports of rare earths and magnets that are critical to everything from smartphones and wind turbines\u00a0to electric vehicles and defence systems.<\/p>\n As part of the negotiations, Washington also pushed back a rule to restrict US tech exports to units of already-blacklisted Chinese companies.
