In the rush of the moment Whyte would tell Kirk \u201cthis is how we roll sometimes\u201d, and would later explain the whole process as making the family \u201cone of us\u201d, who would be welcome at any time.<\/p>\n

Kirk marvelled at how NZ rugby\u2019s \u201cintellectual property\u201d is \u201call-around the world, now\u201d, part of making the welcome special.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they\u2019re never going to have our essence,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we have that, we\u2019re going to be okay. This is where it all starts.\u201d <\/p>\n

He later commented how moving he found the occasion, particularly for the opportunity it gave for the family to \u201cconnect back home\u201d.<\/p>\n

The family was welcomed by mana whenua Numia Tomoana and Kotuku Tomoana, and brought onto the marae by former M\u0101ori All Black and Hawke\u2019s Bay Magpies player Brian Morris.<\/p>\n

Morris translated for the family, their korero also included recalling their one match against each other in 1982, when Hawke\u2019s Bay beat Kirk\u2019s Otago 38-3 in an NPC match in Napier.<\/p>\n

Morris also captained Tamatea to its only Hawke\u2019s Bay premier rugby championship Maddison Trophy win in the same season.<\/p>\n

The p\u014dwhiri also firmed three Hawke\u2019s Bay links to the top tables of NZ rugby, with Kirk<\/a> and Whyte joined by Caren Rangi<\/a>, a member of Kirk\u2019s board.<\/p>\n

With a background in governance, accountancy and public service, including Cook Islands affairs, Rangi entered the top level of NZ\u2019s most powerful sports organisation when a new board was named 12 months ago.<\/p>\n
