Earlier this year, Tim Blake Nelson reprised as role as Samuel Sterns for Captain America: Brave New World<\/a>. Far from his first go in the superhero world<\/a>, and now that he\u2019s gotten a good amount of experience under his belt, he made a novel inspired by that tenure.<\/p>\n

Simply titled\u00a0Superhero<\/a>,\u00a0the book focuses on Peter Compton, a washed-up actor looking to make a career comeback by starring in the fictional cape movie \u201cMajor Machina.\u201d Not long after he\u2019s touched down in Atlanta to begin shooting, things have started to go bad thanks to \u201ctension and egos,\u201d along with Compton\u2019s own on-set behavior making the rounds online. After that, it\u2019s not just the movie that may fall apart, but also his relationship with his longtime producing partner and wife Marci Levy.<\/p>\n

The parallels write themselves, which Nelson wasn\u2019t at all shy about. He told the Hollywood Reporter<\/a> that the book is fairly accurate \u201cabout the world I\u2019ve experienced as an actor and filmmaker. [\u2026] Everything in this book I\u2019ve either experienced or heard about from somebody who experienced it directly. So I don\u2019t look at this as a wildly exaggerated world that I\u2019m depicting.\u201d He was already writing the book when he\u2019d been approached about coming back for\u00a0Captain America,\u00a0and during production, talked with as many people on set as he could\u2014from his fellow actors to Marvel producer Nate Moore and the DP\u2014to \u201cfortify the accuracy\u201d of what he was putting on the page.<\/p>\n

But if you\u2019re thinking Superhero is frequently taking\u00a0potshots at this part of the moviemaking industry a la The Studio,\u00a0Nelson stressed that\u2019s not the case. If anything, he thinks it\u2019s more \u201ca love letter to making movies\u201d and \u201cthe microcosm of making a tentpole movie as a way of looking more broadly at our culture where it is right now.\u201d In fact, he thinks the genre is still doing fairly well, even if it\u2019s not the consistent money maker it used to be, and hopes readers understand he wrote this with real intent and not just to stroke his own ego.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t take writing novels lightly, which is why I waited until my 50s to write my first one,\u201d he told THR<\/a>. \u201cThe ambition here is to write a real novel.\u201d Luckily, Superhero\u00a0is in stores now, so you can find out for yourself how much of a \u201creal novel\u201d it is.<\/p>\n
