It seemed back in 2018 that Tom Hiddleston\u2019s time with Marvel had come to an end when Thanos killed Loki at the start of \u201cAvengers: Infinity War.<\/a>\u201d But that was swiftly undone with \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d a year later thanks to the film\u2019s time-traveling shenanigans.<\/p>\n

Now 15 years since first making his Marvel debut in \u201cThor,\u201d Hiddleston is still playing the Asgardian trickster, having reprised the role in the two-season Disney+ series \u201cLoki\u201d and again in the upcoming blockbuster \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d due out next December.<\/p>\n

In a career-spanning interview with GQ<\/a>, Hiddleston said his affinity for Loki stems from his love of redemption stories from his childhood. As a teen, he saw \u201cThe Shawshank Redemption\u201d in theaters, and a year later, he saw Paul Scofield star in the play \u201cJohn Gabriel Borkman\u201d as a banker imprisoned for embezzlement and who struggles and fails to put his life back together after his release.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u201cI still find it incredibly emotional. It\u2019s so moving, the idea that you get another chance. I suppose I want that for everyone,\u201d Hiddleston said. <\/p>\n

Loki proves to be more successful than John Gabriel Borkman in finding another chance, as by the end of the streaming series bearing his name, he finds himself in control of all the timelines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe \u2026 or multiverse, as it can be called at this point.<\/p>\n

Hiddleston said that he enjoyed working on \u201cLoki\u201d because it involved the character coming to terms with his past, which included his failed invasion of Earth in \u201cThe Avengers\u201d and his uneasy relationship with his brother, Thor. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to become someone different, whose story had a different ending, he had to make peace with the things he did,\u201d Hiddleston says. \u201cIt gave him the power of authorship over his own story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, what Loki does next in \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d is any fan\u2019s guess. \u201cLoki\u201d was designed to kick off a timeline centered around a new multiversal villain, Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors. But Marvel Studios was forced to can that multi-year arc after Majors was convicted of misdemeanor assault and harassment charges.<\/p>\n

Hiddleston, who has finished shooting his scenes for \u201cDoomsday,\u201d is as coy about what\u2019s to come as the rest of the Marvel universe. \u201cIt is monumental. The center of the story is absolutely brilliant and was so surprising when I read it. It just has never been done before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Along with \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d Hiddleston most recently appeared in a West End production of Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cMuch Ado About Nothing\u201d and in this past summer\u2019s film adaptation of Stephen King\u2019s \u201cThe Life of Chuck\u201d from director Mike Flanagan. <\/p>\n

He also finished filming in Nepal for the upcoming Apple TV movie \u201cTenzing,\u201d in which he plays Edmund Hillary opposite Genden Phuntsok as Tenzing Norgay, the sherpa who accompanied Hillary in the first ever climb of Mount Everest. <\/p>\n

And on New Year\u2019s Day, Hiddleston will return to his biggest non-Marvel claim to fame, \u201cThe Night Manager,\u201d 10 years removed from the six-episode series based on John Le Carre\u2019s spy novel. The new series will air on BBC One in the U.K. and on Amazon Prime elsewhere starting Jan. 11.<\/p>\n
