{"id":208286,"date":"2025-12-30T11:46:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T11:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/208286\/"},"modified":"2025-12-30T11:46:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T11:46:21","slug":"alien-invasion-that-could-threaten-nzs-entire-economy-is-just-a-plane-ride-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/208286\/","title":{"rendered":"Alien invasion that could threaten NZ&#8217;s entire economy is just a plane ride away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An alien invasion that could threaten New Zealand&#8217;s entire economy is just a plane ride away.<\/p>\n<p>That is the key message from a new video, which will be compulsory viewing for the country&#8217;s 6 million international arrivals from now on.<\/p>\n<p>Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard said the updated video &#8211; which replaces the current 2019 version on all international flights &#8211; stressed the need for travellers to declare or dispose of any risk items, including food, plants, and animal products.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really vital that we keep invasive pests and plants out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The risk posed by threats such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/business\/580383\/fatal-cases-of-african-swine-fever-worry-local-pork-industry\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">foot and mouth disease<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/world\/409653\/new-zealand-on-look-out-for-stink-bugs-after-europe-hit-hard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brown marmorated stink bug<\/a> could jeopardise our $60 billion primary sector export revenue, and also threaten our natural environment, which is the big drawcard for our tourism industry, another big export business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The video stars three current biosecurity officers, 2025 Young Farmer of the Year Hugh Jackson, champion kayaker Ashton Reiser, and others.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand had about six million international arrivals each year, and the biosecurity risk had increased hugely over time, Hoggard said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The new version keeps the same friendly tone but introduces fresh faces and updated content, including more detail on the potential impacts of biosecurity risks on New Zealand&#8217;s economy and outdoor lifestyle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4JW5O5I_Image_5_jfif.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"591\" alt=\"Andrew Hoggard and MPI \/ Biosecurity NZ\u2019s Mike Inglis - hornets funding\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nBiosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard and Biosecurity NZ&#8217;s Mike Inglis.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ \/ Kim Baker-Wilson\n<\/p>\n<p>The video will help airlines meet their legal obligations under the Biosecurity (Information for Incoming Passengers) Regulations 2023.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of many measures Biosecurity New Zealand had in place to manage the expected increase in passenger volumes this summer, Hoggard said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been great to see Biosecurity New Zealand bolster biosecurity by recruiting more front-line border staff in 2025.
