{"id":209671,"date":"2025-12-31T07:59:06","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T07:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/209671\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T07:59:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T07:59:06","slug":"hawaii-launches-app-to-reward-safe-drivers-with-gift-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/209671\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawaii launches app to reward safe drivers with gift cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; The state is launching the Safe Roads Challenge app to reward drivers for making safe choices behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">This comes after 129 lives were lost on Hawaii\u2019s roadways in 2025, making it the highest number in nearly two decades, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cPreliminary data shows that 90% of these fatalities involve behavior, so we\u2019re already trying to affect driver behavior,\u201d Shelly Kunishige from the Hawaii Department of Transportation said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Hawaii DOT says the free app uses GPS to record drivers\u2019 trips and then assigns them a score based on performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cEveryone thinks they\u2019re a good driver. The Safe Roads Challenge app will tell you, based on data, whether or not you have room to improve,\u201d Kunishige said. \u201cIt\u2019s looking at acceleration, braking, cornering, swerving, whether or not you\u2019re using your phone while you\u2019re driving, and if you\u2019re adhering to the speed limit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Hawaii drivers who download the free app and earn scores of at least 80 points will have the chance to win $25 gift cards every month. They\u2019ll also be entered into the grand prize drawing at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019re hoping that part of it would be would be a financial incentive and part of it would also be people wanting to do something about the traffic deaths and helping to reduce them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The DOT encourages users to download the app and compete with friends and family by adding them under the \u201cFriends\u201d tile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cOur staff, we\u2019ve all signed up and have been comparing scores, so that\u2019s one element that at least it starts a discussion, a discourse, about safe driving that I really hope a lot of people take advantage of,\u201d Kunishige said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The app says it does not send or sell users\u2019 personal information, location data, or individual performance data to anyone, including insurance companies.
