The avalanche hazard reduction is intended to reduce the risk of larger avalanches impacting Thane Road. If debris does reach the roadway, an extended closure may be necessary to safely remove it.

Check for future updates here.

Update 9:30 a.m. 12/31/2025: There is no change to avalanche hazards on Wednesday morning. Conditions remain elevated above Behrends Avenue and Thane Road, according to an update by the City and Borough of Juneau. There is still no evacuation advisory at this time. Thane Road remains closed at the avalanche gates due to continued avalanche risk. Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities crews are actively assessing conditions and will provide another update around noon.

Original story 4:00 p.m. 12/30/2025: The City and Borough of Juneau issued an avalanche advisory on Tuesday at about 3:30 p.m. for elevated conditions above Behrends Avenue and Thane Road.

The city recommends signing up for emergency alerts to stay informed. Ryan O’Shaughnessy, the city’s emergency manager, said this is the best way to be prepared. He said there is no imminent risk, but existing conditions could change that rapidly.

“We’re not issuing an evacuation advisory at this time,” said Ryan O’Shaughnessy, the city’s emergency manager. “However, people should be prepared for that. A unique element to avalanche hazards is that they can very quickly change with very little warning. So right now, we have conditions that could result in an avalanche if they were to change slightly, an avalanche could occur, and folks should be ready to leave their home with little warning should those conditions develop.”

O’Shaughnessy said being prepared to leave applies to residents living above Behrends Avenue. He said they should have a go-bag ready. Thane residents are expected to hunker down at home and are recommended to stock up on food, water, pet supplies, and prescriptions.

Thane Road will be closed at the avalanche gates at 8 p.m. Tuesday due to the risk, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities announced shortly after 2:30 p.m. DOT’s website states the emergency closure will be re-evaluated at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

“The primary hazards for Thane are the highway, there’s no houses in the mapped hazard areas in Thane; however, there are on Behrends,” O’Shaughnessy said. “For residents on Thane, the primary avalanche hazard looks like being cut off.”

“Everybody should know their risk,” O’Shaughnessy said, suggesting residents in both areas assess individual avalanche property hazards by accessing a mapping tool on CBJ’s emergency programs website.

O’Shaughnessy said the city is pre-positioning resources should it need to set up an emergency shelter for residents above Behrends Avenue.

CBJ’s response to avalanches is informed by subject-matter experts from DOT’s avalanche forecast team and the National Weather Service in Juneau, and the city is currently exploring partnerships with the Coastal Alaska Avalanche Center.

“Our number one priority as the city is always going to be protecting life and safety. So as soon as there becomes a hazard that could be a threat to life or safety, we would take action,” O’Shaughnessy said.

No evacuation advisory at this time — additional alerts will be issued if conditions escalate and further action…

[22
273,111,139,69,147
0":"post-211004","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-new-zealand","10":"tag-newzealand","11":"tag-nz","12":"tag-science
["GET
