{"id":211585,"date":"2026-01-01T12:48:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T12:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/211585\/"},"modified":"2026-01-01T12:48:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T12:48:20","slug":"man-dies-in-monsoonal-floods-in-far-north-queensland-as-graziers-wait-to-assess-stock-losses-queensland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/211585\/","title":{"rendered":"Man dies in monsoonal floods in far north Queensland as graziers wait to assess stock losses | Queensland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Police have praised the courageous efforts of an officer who entered crocodile-filled waters in far north <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/queensland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland<\/a> after a man drowned in monsoonal floods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dozens of roads remained closed and communities were isolated as flood waters continued to rise in outback Queensland late on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A man in his 70s was found dead in a submerged vehicle in the far northern town of Normanton on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mount Isa District Acting Supt Paul Austin praised the efforts of emergency services who responded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe SES operator was able to align their vessel [with the submerged car], and one of the police officers entered into a significant depth, and was able to get into the vehicle and recover the deceased male,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf he hadn\u2019t done what he did, it certainly would have made it a very difficult operation to try and retrieve that vehicle with the deceased in it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere\u2019s some really big crocs in the Norman River \u2026 what he did was very courageous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Queensland premier, David Crisafulli, said the loss of the local man was \u201ca deep tragedy for the North West community\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOur big focus remains on infrastructure \u2026 it\u2019s the roads, it\u2019s the bridges.
