{"id":214305,"date":"2026-01-03T04:37:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T04:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/214305\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T04:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T04:37:07","slug":"payne-haas-makes-contract-call-with-a-twist-nrl-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/214305\/","title":{"rendered":"Payne Haas makes contract call with a twist &#8211; NRL News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\/nrl\/teams\/brisbane-broncos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brisbane Broncos<\/a> star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\/players\/payne-haas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Payne Haas<\/a> has reportedly agreed to re-sign with the club, but only on a one-year deal.<\/p>\n<p>Haas, off-contract at the end of 2026, has been able to negotiate with rival outfits since November 1, while he was also believed to be weighing up a move to rugby union.<\/p>\n<p>That fell by the wayside with the R360 tournament &#8211; a Saudi Arabian-backed money-rich competition targetting the best players in rugby league and rugby union &#8211; postponed until 2028.<\/p>\n<p>It was originally supposed to kick-off in October 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The prop was set to be offered as much as $3 million per year to make the switch, and a one-year extension with the Broncos, which is being reported by News Corp, could leave the path open for him to make that switch when the competition does launch.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the move for Brisbane ensures Haas will be at the club for at least the next two seasons, but beyond that, there is less than a guarantee, with R360 likely to start ramping up recruitment again at the back-end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Haas will be, under the terms of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NRL<\/a> deal, free to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1, although R360 are not beholden to that given they do not answer to the Australian competition.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s understood the new year for Haas will not see all that much of an upgrade given he is already on seven figures, and is one of the highest-paid players in the game.<\/p>\n<p>Brisbane doesn&#8217;t have a heap of room to move under their salary cap given other big-money contracts that have been outlaid for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\/players\/reece-walsh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reece Walsh<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\/players\/patrick-carrigan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Carrigan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\/players\/kotoni-staggs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kotoni Staggs<\/a> and others.<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old Haas may have also signed his short-term deal with an eye to negotiating a bigger contract once the game&#8217;s new TV deal kicks in.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s expected the salary cap will continue to rise in the coming years, potentially handing Haas another increase.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Brisbane Broncos star Payne Haas has reportedly agreed to re-sign with the club, but only on a one-year&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":124006,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[111,139,69,213],"class_list":{"0":"post-214305","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-sports","8":"tag-new-zealand","9":"tag-newzealand","10":"tag-nz","11":"tag-sports"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/214305","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=214305"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/214305\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/124006"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=214305"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=214305"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=214305"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
