Hope to see you guys at AO.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sun has not played since reaching the final of the Guangzhou Open in October. Attempting to become the first New Zealander to win a WTA Tour-level singles title since Marina Erakovic, in Memphis in 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/sport\/577003\/tennis-lulu-sun-misses-out-on-wta-title-after-guangzhou-open-final-defeat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she was beaten 7-6 6-2 by American second seed Ann Li.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When her entry for the Auckland tournament was announced in September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/sport\/572601\/tennis-homecoming-for-lulu-sun-means-everything\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sun enthused about returning to play at home.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This means everything to me. I get to play in front of a home crowd and fans. It is going to be energising and it&#8217;s going to be fun,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I am biased, but it is pretty much my favourite tournament of the year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sun is rated at No 90 on the WTA ratings, which puts her in the main draw for the Australian Open which begins on 12 January.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4KWSIFS_240107ASBClassicFinal_01_JPG.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"709\" alt=\"Elina Svitolina of Ukraine reacts during her finals match against Coco Gauff of the USA at the ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland in January 2024.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nElina Svitolina is women&#8217;s top seed for the ASB Classic.<br \/>\nPhoto: Photosport\n<\/p>\n<p>Play begins in the tournament on Monday, with the draw headlined by Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and American Emma Navarro, who have world rankings of 14 and 15 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Venus Williams, who has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, returns to Auckland for the seventh time as a wildcard player. The 45-year-old has not played since the US Open when she and Layla Fernandez made the quarterfinals in early September.<\/p>\n<p>A wildcard has been awarded to Kiwi player Monique Barry. Ranked 258 in the world she will also play in the doubles with compatriot Elyse Tse.<\/p>\n<p>American Sloane Stephens and Briton Katie Boulter also have been granted wildcards.<\/p>\n<p>Tse and fellow Kiwi Aishi Das attempted to gain entry to the main draw through qualifying but were both beaten by more experienced opponents on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Das lost 6-3 6-4 to Veronika Erjavec from Slovenia, while Tse lost 6-0 6-1 to Sofia Costoulas on Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>Tournament organisers said on Saturday that Williams and Svitolina would play together in the doubles.<\/p>\n<p>Tse will team up with Barry in the doubles.<\/p>\n<p>Erin Routliffe and her new partner Asia Muhammad are the top seeds. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/sport\/578744\/erin-routliffe-gaby-dabrowski-split-a-business-decision-but-i-ll-have-a-friend-for-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Routliffe and regular partner Gaby Dabrowski announced their split in November.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/radionz.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=211a938dcf3e634ba2427dde9&amp;id=b3d362e693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for Ng\u0101 Pitopito K\u014drero<\/a>, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Lulu Sun has had to withdraw from next week&#8217;s ASB Classic.
