THE woman behind one of Hollywood\u2019s most infamous films has revealed the truth is far darker \u2013 and far more terrifying \u2013 than anything that made it onto the screen.<\/p>\n

And nothing stung more than seeing a fictional version of her suffering rewritten for blockbuster drama, she says. <\/p>\n The film transformed their chaotic, abusive marriage<\/a> into a carnival of sex<\/a>, drugs<\/a> and mayhem \u2013 but Nadine says even the wildest scenes barely scratched the surface of the truth.<\/p>\n Some were exaggerated beyond recognition. Others were pure inventions<\/a>.<\/p>\n And some moments, she says, were far worse in real life.<\/p>\n A fan-favourite scene showing Margot Robbie<\/a> hurling water in DiCaprio\u2019s face after discovering he\u2019d cheated is also a Hollywood<\/a> invention, Nadine says. <\/p>\n She added: \u201cIn the movie, he\u2019s moaning about a hooker\u2019s name \u201cVenice\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the film she gets angry at him and throws water in his face. That never happened. I probably should\u2019ve thrown water in his face every day, but I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n In reality, she says, she had no clue Belfort was cheating.<\/p>\n \u201cI had no idea he was cheating, he kept it very hidden from me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cI found out through the book and the movie. In our relationship we never fought about women, we only fought about drugs.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s why in the movie it\u2019s so funny to me that the whole time we\u2019re fighting about cheating but it was never about that.\u201d<\/p>\n When she confronted him about the lies added to the film, he brushed it off.<\/p>\n \u201cYou know what Nadine, it\u2019s great for storytelling,\u201d she claims he told her.<\/p>\n One of the most talked-about moments in the film is the \u201cnursery scene\u201d, where Naomi storms into her baby daughter\u2019s room during a violent fight with Belfort.<\/p>\n In the movie, Naomi flees to the nursery clutching their child after Belfort punches her during a Quaalude-fuelled row.\u00a0<\/p>\n Belfort charges into the room, grabs the baby from her arms, and later attempts to drive away with the child while still heavily high.<\/p>\n It\u2019s one of the film\u2019s most shocking sequences \u2013 but Nadine says it\u2019s pure fiction.<\/p>\n \u201cThat scene where I\u2019m all sexy in the nursery, that never happened either \u2013 I wish I was that sexy,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n The scene where Margot Robbie splashes Jordan with water never really happenedCredit: Alamy<\/p>\n Naomi flees to the nursery clutching their child after Belfort punches her during a Quaalude-fuelled rowCredit: Alamy<\/p>\n It\u2019s one of the film\u2019s most shocking sequences, Nadine says it\u2019s pure fictionCredit: Rex Features<\/p>\n The entire confrontation, she says, was fabricated.<\/p>\n Nadine claims she had no input on the script<\/a> and was never asked to verify accuracy.<\/p>\n She says she only realised how she\u2019d been portrayed once the film was already finished.<\/p>\n The nursery moment remains one of the standout scenes in Martin Scorsese\u2019s blockbuster, but Macaluso is firm that Hollywood<\/a> heightened the chaos far beyond reality.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was not fun to see my trauma glorified for the whole world of entertainment,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n While Hollywood dialled up the spectacle, Nadine says it dialled down the true horror.<\/p>\n The real abuse, she says, was darker and more dangerous.<\/p>\n She reveals the moment that led to one of the most violent incidents \u2013 when Belfort reportedly kicked her down the stairs.<\/p>\n In the film the scene shows Nadine\u2019s character, Naomi, threatening Belfort that he would never seen the kids again. <\/p>\n She exposes: \u201cAlthough he got very violent with me, I never said that to him. I never said you\u2019re never going to see your kids again because that\u2019s just not who I am\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s actually because I told him, \u2018If you don\u2019t go to rehab, I\u2019m going to leave you\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n The violence and drug intake, she says, were far worse than portrayed.<\/p>\n \u201cI kept saying to him, you need to go to rehab, I\u2019m not going to sit here and watch you kill yourself,\u201d she explained. <\/p>\n \u201cThere were times that I really did think he was going to kill himself.\u201d<\/p>\n They have two children together and also share two grandchildrenCredit: Nadine Macaluso<\/p>\n The pair tied the knot in 1991 only a couple years after they met at a party in the HamptonsCredit: Nadine Macaluso<\/p>\n While Hollywood dialled up the spectacle, Nadine says it dialled down the true horrorCredit: Nadine Macaluso<\/p>\n The violence and drug intake, she says, were far worse than portrayedCredit: Nadine Macaluso<\/p>\n Even though she wasn\u2019t paid or consulted creatively, Nadine met Robbie before filming so the actress could perfect her Brooklyn accent.<\/p>\n Robbie was 22 \u2013 the same age Nadine had been when she first met Belfort \u2013 and she nervously confessed her fears about the role.<\/p>\n Nadine recalls: \u201cShe was explaining to me about how she didn\u2019t want to get naked and she didn\u2019t want to talk to them about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Her advice was blunt, and devastatingly honest.<\/p>\n \u201cI told her, that feeling right there, you being afraid to speak your truth to power, that\u2019s what I felt every day in my marriage,\u201d Nadine says. <\/p>\n \u201cSo, embody that, and you will really portray what is needed from your character.\u201d<\/p>\n Nadine instantly saw her younger self mirrored in the actress.<\/p>\n \u201cShe was great, she was feisty, she was a young woman who fell madly in love with somebody, just like I did, and really wanted to protect her children,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n Nadine says she always \u201cknew something was wrong\u201d in the relationship \u2013 but leaving Belfort felt impossible.<\/p>\n Her mother, she says, saved her.<\/p>\n When Belfort proposed, Nadine remembers telling her mum, who responded: \u201cYou know you don\u2019t have to do that?\u201d<\/p>\n But Nadine was in love and when she finally tried to escape, the violence escalated.<\/p>\n He allegedly burned her clothing and jewellery<\/a>, hurled abuse and lashed out physically.\u00a0<\/p>\n After he allegedly kicked her down the stairs, Nadine finally left him.<\/p>\n \u201cThe reason why I left him was because he got arrested \u2013 I was finally safe,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n Then came the twist she never saw coming.<\/p>\n
