{"id":215333,"date":"2026-01-03T20:13:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T20:13:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/215333\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T20:13:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T20:13:11","slug":"ben-stokes-wants-mccullum-to-stay-as-england-coach-despite-ashes-loss-ashes-2025-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/215333\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben Stokes wants McCullum to stay as England coach despite Ashes loss | Ashes 2025-26"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ben Stokes has said he has no doubt he wants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/brendon-mccullum\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brendon McCullum<\/a> alongside him as the England head coach, but accepted the Ashes defeat means the pair must sit down before the summer and work out how they can upgrade the team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Senior figures at the England and Wales Cricket Board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/dec\/21\/ecb-clearout-england-leadership-ashes-defeat-australia-cricket\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are wary of making sweeping changes<\/a> and with Stokes seemingly safe, McCullum\u2019s fate as head coach probably rests on his endorsement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">With the fifth Ashes Test starting on Sunday, Stokes warned against ripping up the current regime and suggested the New Zealander will be getting his support \u2013 even if, at 3-1 down with one to play, the final scoreline and tenor is still to be established. He said: \u201cThere is no doubt in my mind me and Brendon are the right people to carry on doing this for the near future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019ve thoroughly enjoyed the time I\u2019ve worked with Brendon. I can\u2019t see there being someone else who I could take this team [with] from where we are now to even bigger heights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSo for us as captain and coach, when we do have the time off, we need to put our heads together and go \u2018What is it that we think we need to do to go to the next level?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Even if the pair\u2019s continuation is signed off \u2013 a decision on McCullum\u2019s future may also hinge on the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka that starts on 7 February \u2013 an internal review into the Ashes campaign will look into pre-series preparation and training on tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It will also delve into the make-up of the backroom staff, including whether enough technical expertise is being offered to players. As it stands, there is no fielding coach or wicketkeeping mentor, while David Saker, the bowling consultant, is on a short-term deal. Rob Key, similarly under scrutiny as the England men\u2019s team director, has admitted McCullum\u2019s preference for a pared-back coaching set-up may have hindered the team in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/dec\/23\/england-cricket-mid-ashes-break-noosa-excessive-drinking\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Key\u2019s investigation<\/a> into the mid-tour break in Noosa has not thrown up any examples of wrongdoing by players, but the team culture \u2013 including alcohol consumption \u2013 and the cost-to-value ratio of such McCullum-led extracurricular activities will also be examined.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Stokes (left) protects his head as Will Jacks drops a catch during England\u2019s training session at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Photograph: Robbie Stephenson\/PA<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Stokes said: \u201cYou look back at how things have gone over the last year, the results and the consistency hasn\u2019t quite been there from the first two and a half to three years we were in charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAll we\u2019ve ever wanted to do is constantly push the guys and not wanting to stand still. We\u2019ve got some things to go away and speak about and try to get the boys pushing even further forward than we managed to achieve since me and Brendon first took over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Perhaps the biggest change in that time is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/article\/2024\/sep\/03\/brendon-mccullum-england-cricket-white-ball-coach\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McCullum taking on the white-ball teams<\/a> as part of a contract extension to the end of 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Stokes said: \u201cHe has got two jobs.
