A supplement can help fill gaps when you\u2019re not getting enough vitamin B12 from foods like eggs, oysters, and salmon, but experts say there\u2019s no single best time to take it.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Because <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/vitamin-b12-7252832\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin B12<\/a> is water-soluble, meaning it dissolves in water, it\u2019s often best taken on an empty stomach with water, said <a href=\"https:\/\/meganmeyerphd.com\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Megan Meyer, PhD<\/a>, a science communication consultant based in Durham, North Carolina. Some limited evidence also suggests vitamin B12 could reduce sleep, so taking it earlier in the day may be a good idea.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Still, there\u2019s no universally ideal time to take vitamin B12, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/talia-follador-rdn-ldn-52842883\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Talia Follador, RDN, LDN<\/a>, a registered dietitian nutritionist and founder of Follador Nutrition Services. \u201cWhat matters most is being consistent and taking the proper dosage,\u201d she said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> While the timing of vitamin B12 may not matter much, other factors can impact the efficacy of the supplement, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corenutritionhw.com\/about\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Julie Pace, RDN<\/a>, a functional dietitian nutritionist &amp; founder of Core Nutrition Health &amp; Wellness.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> These include the form of the supplement, <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/stomach-7644099\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stomach acid levels<\/a>, existing B12 status, and the body\u2019s ability to produce a protein called intrinsic factor, which is essential for absorption. \u201cThink of it as a \u2018shuttle bus\u2019 that carries B12 through your digestive system into your bloodstream,\u201d Pace told Health. \u201cWithout it, your body can&#8217;t absorb B12 from food, regardless of how much you eat.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For people who have trouble absorbing B12, higher-dose supplements or even injections may be necessary, Follador said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Meyer recommends <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/foods-with-the-most-vitamin-b12-11852167\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">getting vitamin B12 from food<\/a> whenever possible. Many animal products naturally contain B12, and some foods\u2014such as breakfast cereals, nutritional yeast, and plant-based milks\u2014are fortified with it.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> However, people who are <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/nutrition\/21-important-facts-about-vitamin-b12-deficiency\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deficient in vitamin B12<\/a>, which can be confirmed with a blood test, may benefit from supplements.
