Today, we&#8217;re focusing on diet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c571b5\" class=\"body-graf\">You may have heard that one of the healthiest eating patterns in the world is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/mediterranean-diet-rcna63362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mediterranean diet<\/a>, primarily because of its emphasis on plant-based whole foods, such as legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Research shows that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/plant-based-diet-rcna136256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">diet high in plants<\/a> and low in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/health\/processed-food-examples-rcna152390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">processed foods<\/a> can reduce the risk of many conditions, from Type 2 diabetes to high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-776561\" class=\"body-graf\">Most American adults could stand to get more plants into their diets; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7101a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent research<\/a> estimates that less than 13% of adults eat the recommended amount of fruits (1.5-2 cups) and vegetables (2-3 cups). So, to get yourself closer to following these guidelines, registered dietitian and nutrition expert on the <a href=\"https:\/\/smart.link\/i03pn3creclh2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Start TODAY app<\/a> Natalie Rizzo suggests one simple goal.<\/p>\n<p>Dietitian Resolution: Eat 1 More Plant a Week<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b6c5c7\" class=\"body-graf\">Rizzo explained in the <a href=\"https:\/\/smart.link\/i03pn3creclh2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Start TODAY app&#8217;s Holiday Helper audio guide<\/a> that she&#8217;s seen all too many people try out &#8220;some sort of crash diet&#8221; at the start of a new year. &#8220;I call it a crash diet because it will crash out,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8f5abd\" class=\"body-graf\">With these diets, the changes being made are so different from a person&#8217;s previous lifestyle that they become unrealistic.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b859e1\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;Dec. 31, I eat however I want, and Jan 1., I\u2019m now a vegan or whatever. How is that possible? It just doesn\u2019t work. It\u2019s not sustainable. You have to do it in small steps,&#8221; Rizzo said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b22a56\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;I know that people don\u2019t like to hear that because it\u2019s more difficult to make small steps, but &#8230; that\u2019s what leads to long-lasting change.\u200a&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8fe9e7\" class=\"body-graf\">Her suggestion? If you want to eat more plants, pick one meal throughout the week where you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/healthy-food-swaps-dietitians-rcna187166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">add or swap in<\/a> a plant-based food.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-793265\" class=\"body-graf\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/smart.link\/i03pn3creclh2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Start TODAY app<\/a> has six meal plans with many recipes to help you eat healthier this year. If you can eat more plants in your diet, it&#8217;s going to help you have better health outcomes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How to Get Started<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f116d8\" class=\"body-graf\">Pick a meal and add a plant somewhere, either as a swap or additional ingredient.
