\nA coleslaw with some unusual ingredients that was spotted in a West Coast supermarket.

A mis-labelled Westport supermarket coleslaw has lit up social media.<\/p>\n
More than 300 people have liked the post and about 90 have commented since someone put up a photo of the New World Westport label yesterday.<\/p>\n
The label said the coleslaw contained lamb lung, crude protein, crude fat and crude fibre.<\/p>\n
“FEED AS DOG TREAT ONLY,” the label warned.<\/p>\n
“Not suitable as a complete meal. Ensure fresh water is available. Monitor dog and remove before becomes choke hazard. Not suitable for human consumption. PET FOOD ONLY.”<\/p>\n
The wits weighed in on Facebook:<\/p>\n
“It is clearly for a vegetarian dog.”<\/p>\n
“I always thought those folks on the West Coast were ‘special’\u2026”<\/p>\n
“Hmm tasty.”<\/p>\n
“Is it gluten free?”<\/p>\n
“Obviously gone to the dogs!!”<\/p>\n
A Foodstuffs South Island spokesman said its delicatessen scale in Westport clearly had a few “new year cobwebs”. It was printing some unexpected ingredients on labels for two products – coleslaw salad and Thai kumara salad.<\/p>\n
“The labels have the correct product, date, weight and price, but the printed recipe shows some flavours and instructions that don’t quite fit in these summer favourites,” the spokesman said.<\/p>\n
“While we and our customers can see the lighter side, we’re prioritising a technical fix.”<\/p>\n
If any customers had questions or concerns, they were welcome to come back to the store and the team would happily clarify, the spokesman said.<\/p>\n
“Westport is one of 34 Foodstuffs South Island stores that serve communities of fewer than 5000 people, and that’s something our co-op of local grocers is proud of.”<\/p>\n
