{"id":219196,"date":"2026-01-06T06:37:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T06:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/219196\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T06:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T06:37:07","slug":"eb-games-proposes-closing-all-new-zealand-stores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/219196\/","title":{"rendered":"EB Games proposes closing all New Zealand stores"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JV7W4V_465016787_27755108420770130_2004057600041718439_n_jpg.webp\" width=\"1050\" height=\"787\" alt=\"EB Games is proposing to close its New Zealand stores.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nEB Games is proposing to close its New Zealand stores.<br \/>\nPhoto: Supplied\n<\/p>\n<p>EB Games is proposing to shut down its New Zealand business and close all its stores, according to a letter sent to employees.<\/p>\n<p>In a note to employees seen by RNZ, managing director Shane Stockwell said: &#8220;This proposal is not final, and no decision will be made until we have completed a full consultation process in good faith with affected team members.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This proposal includes the closure of all remaining EB Games New Zealand stores and the New Zealand Distribution Centre.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the proposal were to proceed, it would mean that all roles within EB Games New Zealand would be disestablished.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>EB Games is an Australian-based video game and pop culture merchandise retailer, owned by GameStop since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>There are now 38 stores in New Zealand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1326380\/000162828025014731\/gme-20250201.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to GameStop&#8217;s latest annual report<\/a>, and 336 in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s uncertain how many jobs would be lost if the proposal goes through and EB Games closes all its New Zealand stores.<\/p>\n<p>The chain has been facing stress for some time, including closures of stores in both Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of last year, the company proposed to eliminate all its New Zealand administrative staff, The Post reported.<\/p>\n<p>Stockwell described the New Zealand business as no longer commercially viable, with a &#8220;multi-million dollar loss during the 2024 fiscal year&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said the retail market continues to be sluggish and the company was not confident its performance would improve.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are saddened to be in this position having already made significant and repeated efforts to turn the business around,&#8221; Stockwell wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The company said that there may be opportunities for New Zealand employees to relocate and take up work in the Australian EB Games operations.<\/p>\n<p>Employees have been asked to submit feedback on the closure proposal by 12 January.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/radionz.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=211a938dcf3e634ba2427dde9&amp;id=b3d362e693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for Ng\u0101 Pitopito K\u014drero<\/a>, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"EB Games is proposing to close its New Zealand stores.
