{"id":220868,"date":"2026-01-07T05:30:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T05:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/220868\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T05:30:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T05:30:09","slug":"ai-hallucinations-and-the-dilemma-of-false-or-misleading-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/220868\/","title":{"rendered":"AI hallucinations and the dilemma of false or misleading information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By ABC News business reporter Adelaide Miller<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4LW5H44_copyright_image_287045\" width=\"1050\" height=\"558\" alt=\"Artificial intelligence generic\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nAI can provide insights on just about anything now, and the consequences of hallucinations can be dire.<br \/>\nPhoto: 123RF\n<\/p>\n<p>The strangest thing recently happened involving a lying AI chatbot.<\/p>\n<p>It was at the end of November when I was reporting on gamified cryptocurrency and the ethics of allowing kids to play.<\/p>\n<p>I needed a response from a company called Aavegotchi, given they were the crypto game in question.<\/p>\n<p>Normally a company will take at least a few hours to respond to questions, sometimes even a day or two.<\/p>\n<p>But with Aavegotchi, a company that appears to be based in Singapore, the response came back in under 10 seconds, signed off as Alex Rivera, the community liaison at Aavegotchi.<\/p>\n<p>The response was detailed and physically impossible to write so quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Not to mention the fact that it allowed no time for an executive to sign off on the response before pressing send.<\/p>\n<p>And so naturally, I asked Alex Rivera if they were an AI bot.<\/p>\n<p>This is what came back:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No, this was not an automated or AI-generated response. It was written by a human member of the Aavegotchi core team (we&#8217;re a small, tight-knit group and still handle press inquiries personally, especially from major outlets like the ABC).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Happy to jump on a quick call if you&#8217;d like to verify or ask follow-ups directly-feel free to reach out anytime before your deadline.Thanks again for covering the space thoughtfully!&#8221; was the response I received, again within 10 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>It was signed off as: &#8220;Alex (real human)&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>When the alleged Alex Rivera then provided me with a number to call them on and it rang out, they told me they had just stepped out for a coffee.<\/p>\n<p>As I kept trying to ring, they fed me more lies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel terrible that the connection keeps failing, it&#8217;s super unusual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I pushed to speak to a manager and Alex Rivera enthusiastically obliged, sharing an email address. But soon after emailing, it bounced back.<\/p>\n<p>The only person available to speak to at Aavegotchi seemed to be the robot; the spokesperson I quoted in my article.<\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden, I was dealing with a different ethical dilemma outside of crypto for kids.<\/p>\n<p>Asking whether it&#8217;s okay for a company to hide its use of AI, and wondering how a journalist is meant to refer to a chatbot in their reporting.<\/p>\n<p>AI hallucinations<\/p>\n<p>There is a name for this practice, known as AI hallucinations, when a computer generates information that seems accurate, but is actually false or misleading.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Nicholas Davis, from the Human Technology Institute at UTS, says when AI is used in this way, it&#8217;s destroying the already-limited trust the new technology has with the public.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s implemented really thoughtlessly&#8230; with the idea that the objective is to get a nullifying response to the customer as opposed to solving that problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Given AI can provide insights on just about anything now, it&#8217;s not hard to imagine just how dire the consequences of hallucinations could be.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take Bunnings, for example.<\/p>\n<p>The company had an incident last month when a customer was given electrical advice from a chatbot that could only be carried out by someone with an electrical licence.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, it was providing illegal advice.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government has spent the past two years consulting and preparing a &#8220;mandatory guardrails&#8221; AI plan to operate under an AI act.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s been downgraded to instead use existing laws to manage AI, at least in the short-term.<\/p>\n<p>But Professor Davis says we need to develop strict rules now, while we still find ourselves in the emerging stage of the tech.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we want to actually force people to know where and when AI systems are making decisions, we&#8217;ve got this limited window while they&#8217;re still kind of relatively immature and identifiable to build this into the architecture and make it work,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>If we don&#8217;t, it may be too hard to fix later.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen in digital systems before that, after a while, if you set up the architecture in such a way that you don&#8217;t allow for this type of disclosure, it becomes incredibly costly and almost impossible to retrofit,&#8221; Professor Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>Australians want to know when AI is used<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to trusting AI systems, Australia is sceptical, sitting near the bottom of a list of 17 countries that took part in a global 2025 study.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Davis said this doesn&#8217;t reflect whether Australians think the technology is useful, but instead shows they don&#8217;t believe that &#8220;it&#8217;s being used in ways that benefit them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What Australians don&#8217;t want to be is at the receiving end of decisions that they don&#8217;t understand, that they don&#8217;t see, that they don&#8217;t control,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>For a new technology that is so invasive and so powerful, it&#8217;s only fair that the public wants to be looped in, particularly when the public discourse involves companies pointing the finger elsewhere when a system stuffs up.<\/p>\n<p>When Air Canada&#8217;s chatbot provided incorrect information about a flight discount, the airline tried to argue that the chatbot was its own &#8220;legal entity&#8221; and was responsible for its own actions, refusing to compensate the affected customer.<\/p>\n<p>That argument was rejected by British Columbia&#8217;s Civil Resolution Tribunal, and the traveller who received that information was compensated.<\/p>\n<p>But this example raises an important question: if an AI bot provides false information, without disclosing who or what sent the information, how can it be held to account?<\/p>\n<p>What would have happened with Air Canada if we didn&#8217;t have the paper trail to lead us back to a technological error inside the company?<\/p>\n<p>A journalist is held accountable through their by-line, companies with their logos, drivers with their number plates, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>But if someone is provided with information by a fictional character like Alex Rivera, how can we hold them accountable if something were to go wrong?<\/p>\n<p>When a journalist emails a company with questions looking for answers, the least we expect is a real person to feed us the spin, half-truths or outright lies.
